Hey there guys, doing great?

Well, don´t want to get things much longer so I´m gonna be straight to the point, I have a 3.0.1 Switch and I´m not sure if I should update or not

The thing is, I´m not certain yet if I´m going to install homebrew and such on it, the thing is, I definetely will buy Smash Bros next December and play with the online part and such, but, I was thinking about getting a second switch just for this, and, have this old one available for future homebrew, like emulation and such

But for now, what I´m worried about is missing important updates to a possible hacked switch in the future, for what I know, I don´t even have the ability to use the Gamecube adapter, right? I´m afraid that, in the future, I might want to use homebrew on my old switch and be "stuck" in the 3.0.1, without being able to update cause Nintendo already made a "newer" update that can block potential homebrew software

I know it´s a common debate here and I already saw discussion about this in the forum, but none of those addressed this part with the Gamecube adapter for example, so, what you guys think? I´m right to think about updating now, that I have the current Switch features working and homebrew also still works, or, the option of keeping it on 3.0.1 will assure me that this feature can be easily implemented in the future by the mod community?

Wanna hear your opnions on this, and, of course, thanks a lot for the ones that are reading already! ^^

I myself was at the same position and decided to update.
The only real disadvantage is that there is no warmboot exploit yet. So you have to boot into rcm and have to push a payload via a pc to your switch but since i almost never shut it down it's no problem for me.

I updated to 4.1 and am very happy with where I am at. 4.x will eventually get a warmboot, and there isn't much to miss if you're not on 5.x.
Almost all 5.x exclusive games can be installed anyway as an NSP and work just fine on 4.1, so it's a non-issue for now.

The problem is, I can´t update to 4.1 anymore, right? I have to go 5.X if I want to get updated now via nintendo servers and such

Just update without burning fuses using this tool. Fuses are the only thing that prevent us from downgrading but we now have a way to update without burning them. The only stipulation for updating without burning fuses is that you use AutoRCM as it will prevent you from accidentally burning the fuses.

That sounds like a good option but requires homebrew right? The problem here is that I´m not sure I will be able to get a new Switch along with the new Smash and, if I use homebrew on this one, I won´t be able to play Smash online later duo the risk of a ban, am I correct?

If I got a second Switch already than yeah, that would be a great option, thanks for sharing! ^^

If you're not going to be using homebrew, why are you worrying about firmware at all?

There is always a risk however homebrew tend to have much lower chances of getting you banned as opposed to piracy. Also, there is another but riskier method of updating without burning fuses. What you will do is perform the official update online then before the console reboots, insert a jig to short pin 10 with as well as hold volume + which will boot the console into RCM. Once in RCM, either install AutoRCM or make sure you always turn the console on by entering RCM first. An alternative is to keep the console in sleep mode the entire time so you never have to re-enter RCM unless the console runs out of battery.

Well, cause I still don´t know yet! (I know, sounds ridiculous, right? XD)

The thing is, Switch is not one of those consoles that is getting me super excited for in terms of new games, only a few ones that I already have or will buy for certain in the future, but, the idea of using emulators and homebrew features on a portable console gets me excited, and, as a "retro-gamer", I really like to get the option of putting some other softwares on the console when able

That´s why I´m still divided on this, I know it´s not that much of a common ground to work with, but yeah, that´s why I made a post here to see if I can clarify the risks and options of this work-around, and I thank the patience! :)

The answer has always been the same.

You need features that are in later versions?
Update without burning fuses.

You don't need features that are in later versions?
Don't update. Why bother?

You got two choices....update to play the latest games, or buy another Switch and keep the other one at low firmware.....but, honestly, is it worth waiting for who knows who long before we get a coldboot solution? AutoRCM isn't so bad, when you're not playing the system, put it in the dock or plug in a USB-C cable into it and plug it in the wall with the power on and you wont' have to worry about the battery going flat. Once you get a few games on the system that you are satisfied with, you won't be turning it off much so you won't need to inject a payload as often

Honestly, unless you're on version 1.0.0, you're not gonna miss out on a ton of special options.

Nobody turns their switch off, it just goes to sleep. These warm boot exploits that are coming...does it matter that much to you? If it does, your best bet is to update without burning fuses using the above posted method...

Your next best bet is to just update. Just one man's opinion though. It's a much more attractive device when you stop worrying so much and just accept that you'll have all CFW and benefits therein, and that 95% of Nintendo's online services won't be worth worrying about if you have any other gaming system. I play my banned switch exclusively, and the clean one? For dark souls remaster and diablo? Meh. There are some good online games don't get me wrong, but people worrying about the future too much risk missing the here and now.

Many thanks for all the replies, you guys already helped me a lot and I´m almost certain on which direction I should go, but, there are only two doubts I need to get out of the way:

1 - I really want to get the Gamecube Adapter support and, for what I know, it´s only available after update 4.0.1 right? If so, can I update to this version with an offline method using an original cartridge of a game that contains such update? (read in the other post about the update without burning fuses that some games auto-update the Switch for an specific version)

2 - The current Nintendo official version, has something that blocks homebrew applications of some sort already? If I say, in the future, gets an SXOS to hack the system to install homebrew and such, this current version is still vulnerable, right?

I think a better view on these two problems already solves my issue, so, thanks in advance for the info! :)

  1. Its in 4.0 and cart updates will burn the fuses much like an official online update. Still follow the update without burning fuses guide
  2. None of the current firmware versions block anything homebrew-related. Homebrew issues due to firmware are due to the homebrew themselves not being made compatible with those firmwares

Many thanks there, that helped me a lot already! ^^

But, mentioning your reply about the burned fuses... there is still a really good reason for not burn them regarding the hack scene? I mean, the old Switches already have the RCM option because of the hardware, so, what´s the big deal today on keeping the fuses untouched?

The current exploit utilizes a jig and USB cable. Even the best of jigs can wear down your pins. And if you don't want to use a jig, there is AutoRCM which is not 100% noob-friendly but manageable. The point here is having options is better than being forced to only use one exploit.

Have three switches, two unopened and one I updated to 5.1 and am just keeping offline and 100% happy with sx os an Bob's cdncp so far.

My only concern is Deja Vu really going to be released? Is it even real? What will it open over what we have now?
