Never liked to have a HM slave on the team, I distributed the moves. Gen 7 was a blessing.

I just have a team mostly made of stupid pokemon I caught in the wild and put 1 HM on each. The trick is to just use your one good pokemon until it dies, throw in a stupid HM pokemon, revive your good pokemon, have the stupid HM pokemon die in one hit, switch to your good pokemon, and repeat.

do you play online with that team though

I cannot count the number of times when my HM slave(s) have bought enough time for me to revive my attacker. Perks of the "1 starter + 5 sacrificial lamb" strat ;A;
