now curiosity has also been peaked with the whole "xci dumping" thing. im aware the purpose is too backup your games but what about a friends? i mean assuming you dont get banned for a game you already own, then next question is how would nintendo know who owns the game? i mean i could buy a game, dump it, and sell it to a friend and they would be none the wiser. Even if there was a different IP or mac id, they still have to assume maybe you sold the game or gave it to someone or something.

Nintendo cannot tell the difference between backups without the header. Originally, as long as 2 devices never went online with the same header, you would be safe. However, that no longer applies as there is an extra check to see if the header matches the game so even if you dump your header from your friends game, you will still get flagged for using a foreign header.

if 2 games are online with identical certs then obviously it has been pirated

It's not hard to fathom

Question: is it possible to put xci into a folder on sxos and have it load?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Having the xci on the root makes the sad look a bit messy

The instructions said put it in the root
What do you think?

If both games connected online then there would be two identical game certs connected online. Surely that would cause some red flags. This is what I (and a lot of others) am worried about because Nintendo could outright ban the cert for that game, which causes problems like in that example you just gave.

If Nintendo doesn’t ban the cert then you will eventually have websites full of certs for different games so that everyone can play online, and surely Nintendo won’t allow that.

We don’t know if / what they will do. What we do know is that Nintendo checks the cert when you connect online. Having 2 or more certs connect online is bad. Having a game like Splatoon connect online with a different cert is also very bad.

well thats kind of ultimately the point i was making, if you have 1000 different people using it then yea clearly theres gonna be an issue, but if you have 2 or 3 people who use it at different points during the week, i bet you'd fly under the radar.

It’s not manually checked it’s automatic. As soon as 2 or more certs connect it would be flagged (I assume).
I can’t imagine the system they have having leeway for like 2 or 3 of the exact same certs connecting. It just wouldn’t make any sense.

Since 1.1 is out should I dump anything before I update my 3.0.0 switch?

Sorry if this posts twice. it didn't show up even after refreshing

That did not sit so well with Nintendo during the 3DS era. And considering that they clearly amped up security compared to the 3DS, they will most definitely not tolerate more than one of the same header going online at the same time. Its one of the easiest ways to tell Nintendo "Hey, I hacked my console!"

why not? what if i lend my game to someone? or someone buys the game from me? again i get that at the same time clearly it wouldnt make sense, but my point is they have to have a system in place for that sort of thing.

Because there's literally no way that both you and your friend have the same header without you first making a backup of the game and then distributing it to someone else which is the definition of piracy.

sure there is, its called lending them the game. Ive made it very clear that being on at the same time is pointless, but giving game to someone else creates a new variable, is my point.

How can the big N know which one is the pirated one if u both have the “same cartridge”

So, in the change log it states user dumped headers are now implemented. This implies they weren't before. I had assumed the whole XCI file was mounted and used as a cart image to the system, but now that I know SXOS 1.0 didn't use user certs even if your dump had one, I question exactly how they are loading the XCI files now.

They won't question whose the original, they'll just ban both. At the very least, they can just ban the certificate so that way neither of you can go online with that header anymore. Its not rocket science to realize that there is no way both you and your friend are using the same header to go online at exactly the same time without extracting the header. The cartridge has to be duplicated in some way which Nintendo recognizes as a ToS violation hack.
