Hacking Question Since SX OS will use cartridge "back ups" , do we need to change the headers to play online?

I feel that Nintendo Switch is more of a local multiplayer console..
Just see how in every promotional Nintendo Switch Video they only show Local Multiplayer

I don't care about being banned either
Nintendo online is shyt anyway

Gonna still approach cautiously, but I'm prepared the for the real chance of my console being banned from online. I like the homebrew stuff, and I've no intention of paying for multiplayer so the only thing I'd miss would be eshop access. And most of those games are on PC anyway

Even the Eshop access isn't really a big deal, i'm sure that in the future, there will be a way to play those games too.

No because the eShop is not where you download game updates from. Nintendo for whatever reason believes its ok for you to grab game and system updates even if you violate their terms of service.
They still want money, and they still get that when they sell game carts that aren't completely useless.

What if you play online with your own dumped .xci? Will it still risk your console getting banned?
Back in the Gateway3DS era, it was possible to play online by replacing the header with your own private header from a different game via Gateway ROM Patcher. It's not like that for the Switch?

We don't know if its like that for the Switch. There is speculation that the game can detect a foreign header being injected and flag Nintendo for a ban. Until someone provides evidence, it is better safe than sorry. Also, running a dump in of itself presents a ban risk as there is no official way to run backups; you would need some sort of homebrew/CFW. Nintendo reserves the right to ban you for running either of those.

Im suprised theres no tutorials about extracting your own header from a useless game you own or any warnings about this because becuase the sx pro will arrive to people's houses in 2 days and thousands of people have their roms ready that the got from *****, word needs to be spread asap...

your blocked from nintendo servers, so possible not sadly...

Actually I read you will be able to get game uodates and news even if banned. What you can”t do is login withyour NNID on a banned unit so no eShop or online gaming, but the updates on Switch work like ps3 (no psn login).

So here is what I am going do to...First dump and trim my library of 15 carts so they have a legit header. All scene releases have no header. So be in airplain mode when in cfw and mount all the games you want, which will create the game icon. The revoot to OFW and go online and manually do your updates which can be done without the carts mounted.

It doubt it will be terribly long before their is a package loader and then you can install uodates and dlc as well as eShop games with ease. But evrything I have seen indicates games will uldate even if your console is banned.

Is there anything that can be extracted from a cart to be able to play the backups online? Like, if I know someone who has a physical copy of Splatoon 2 and borrow it from them, would I be able to get a certain thing out of the cartridge so that I could then give him the cart back and play online with a Splatoon 2 backup?

Also, how risky do you guys think it will be to have your Switch connected to the internet and play dumps even if you're not doing online matches or are playing single player games?

Its called the header and as long as you don't go online at the same time, you wouldn't be banned for using a foreign header (although you could still be banned for running a backup). And to answer your other question, we've been able to get away with it on previous Nintendo devices, but the Switch now sends more data to Nintendo than ever before so it is most definitely less safe.

PSN is the same, at least it was for ps3 and vita.
Thank you, Sony.

Alright, so the cart certificate is used to obtain an authentication token from Nintendo which allows it to access online services. The cert sends a title ID of the game it’s for. If the title ID in the cert does not match the title ID of the current process or the certificate is invalid in some way (BBB’s blanked out certs) online access will be denied (and a ban worthy offence possibly put onto your Switch’s record). So you definitely cannot mix one type of game’s certificate to another game. You may be able to use a certificate from the same type of game ie. a Mario Odyssey certificate for another Mario Odyssey dump.

Same goes for the tickets that eShop content uses. If you don’t have a completely legit and signed ticket for your NSP file, it will have the same issue.

For future reference, can I have evidence of this?

In the end we don't know yet. In the 3DS scene it's possible to use foreign headers, but maybe Nintendo learned from that and checks more this time. I personally wouldn't risk it.

If you're looking for hard evidence (network logs, capture files, decompiled modules, SDK reference materials, etc) I don't have them, no. My source of the info may though, you should ask them:

That's fine, I think I'll trust word from SciresM himself. I wanted to make a thread detailing this with the evidence to back it up as a general PSA, but I believe Scires has better things to do than provide the actual data to a noob such as myself.
