Hardware wiiu external hdd compatibility

It should as long as its 2tb or lower. If its more, it will just use 2tb.

If I bought a 4TB HDD, would I be able to use 2TB for Wii U games and format the remaining 2TB as an NTFS partition and use it to backup my movie/music files? It's just that 4TB drives tend to work out more cost effective than 2TB ones, so if I can use the extra space for something that would be the better option.

I believe that I have to let the Wii U format the drive to it's own special format but could I then connect it to a PC and reduce the Wii U partition to 2TB (I'm not sure if the PC utils could do that as they won't recognise the format but maybe they'll still be able to reduce the size without corrupting it) and create an NTFS partition on the rest.

Maybe this would be easier if I were using the drive for vWii games, as then I could just use my PC to create a FAT32 partition for that (and Ustealth it) and an NTFS partition for my backups but as Wii U games tend to be bigger than vWii games, I'm thinking it would be better to use the HDD for Wii U games and maybe a USB flash drive or the SD card for vWii/Gamecube/emulator games.

The USB keys on the Wii U works badly or not, prefer an external hard drive for better connectivity and with a cable in Y

At the moment I've just got a couple of Wii U games installed on the internal 32GB and a 64GB USB flash drive with a few Wii games on. I haven't been able to play the latter yet as I haven't got the right controllers yet but they all loaded OK when I tested them.

Even so, you may be right. I see there appears to be a way to use just one HDD and make the Wii games VC injects now https://gbatemp.net/threads/run-wii-wiiu-and-gc-backups-off-the-same-external-hd.489718/

Even so I still need to know if I can just use 2TB of a 4TB HDD as a Wii U partition and use the other 2TB as an NTFS partition? I doubt I'll need more than 2TB for all the Wii U/Wii/Gamecube/Emulator games I want to install, so if I can't split a 4TB HDD it's pointless buying one and I might as well just get a 2TB drive.

No, when you plug a USB drive into the Wii U that isn't already formatted for it, it asks if you want to format it. It doesn't give any options at all other than format or cancel.

Thanks. I just bought a 2TB external PSU HDD as that should be more than enough for the Wii U stuff and I'll buy another USB powered HDD to use for backups, etc. as it's more convenient to be able to move it between machines without needing a PSU.
