Hacking New System, what do?

So just bought a N3DSXL, not realizing it shipped with 11.5 now. I think i'll return it for a N2DSXL because cheaper. Either way, it seems i'd need a flashcart to hack it at this point. I saw one has the advantage of still using DS roms after flashing and the other doesn't. So wanted to ask which is recommended, or if there were some way to do the DSi Ware method on 11.6 with online help?

you can do the ds injection hack to get cfw on your 3ds console and i can help you if you wanted to

the only thing you have to do is buying a compatible game from the eshop

I was reading that on the guide, and seemed simple. I have a US region system. Would i need to update to 11.6 first? Either way, i'll be switching to N2DS over the weekend to save some money
