In the recent light that liquid metal can reduce temps by 20c

Can the same Liquid cooling method be applied to the Nintendo Switch?

?

I have some spare Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Liquid Metal Thermal Paste and woundered if it would be fun to swap it over.

are there any issues with Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Liquid Metal Thermal Paste eating any of the metal on the heatsink? or casusing issues?

I dont care about damage, i do this type of stuff all the time with laptops so not a newbie.

Do you have any results on tempratures and performance as of now?

i have no actual proof as my switch isnt hacked and i have no way of seeing system temps, is what i can say is the unit is cool, even playign mario for hours back doesnt get hot like it used to, fan never spins up (sometimes i have to put my ear to it to see if its even running) and battery seems to be a smudge better.

Again i have no evidence but "feels" like its improved it.

That sounds pretty awesome!
Does the last picture show how you applied the liquid metal?

Would be very nice, if you could explain a bit more on which places you have to put the liquid metal on.

yes the last photo is the liquid coverage.

So i did this

  1. Ordered liquid metal from overclockers (same brand as the one in Linus's video)
  2. Opened switch with ifixit kit (a must the screws are tiny)
  3. cleaned all of nintendo JUNK paste off the heat pipe/gpu/cpu with removal products this took a few goes to get it all off.
  4. applied liquid metal directly to GPU/CPU
  5. placed back thin copper sheet
  6. used artic silver ontop of copper sheet to metal heatpipe plate
  7. on back of heatpipe plate that touches metal casing applied artic silver allot.

done

I just used ic diamond on mine wich cools a lot more 2 then the usual thermal paste and it's less of a pain in the ass

i thought if im going to open it up may as well go metal.

that whole process took me about 10mins.
I get that but it's just easier to replace and such. I delid all my pc cpu's and put liquid metal on it but cpu's usually go to 90 degrees when overclocking while a switch goes to 60 max so i don't see the need of putting liquid metal on it

I would never racoomand that s mod for obvious reasons, open ur switch and apply this will nullify ur consol's warranty and and all switches are officially guaranteed for 2 years of Nintendo's assistance, if ur console is burnt for overheating, Nintendo sure will replace or repair it. then why even bother open it and might possibly screw urself trying to apply this "mod"?

I get that but the most important thing you'll get out of it are less fps drops. The switch cpu speed is affected with temps

In europe warranty laws are 2 years for electronics but in the states it's only 1

switch is like £250 brand new so not a massive loss like a PS4/XBOX one cost.

besides, its just cooling and i have proven it

just sharing my experience upto people to make their own minds up.

Switch in 2 years new will be like £199 anyway

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
