What version do you have to be in to use SDXC cards?
The SDXC update is separate from regular system updates, you don't get it until you insert an ExFAT formatted card (can be a SDHC card) and it asks you to update.
hmm, the switch I got that was most likely updated to 4.1.0 via transfer when I had to send mine in asked to update to use my SDXC 256gb samsung evo. So I am not quite sure. I was going off the fact that if the switch did not have the update necessary for SDXC cards that formatting it most likely would not work... But if its just a exfat update then I would understand why it would work. Odd that mine said SDXC when I had to update it

It should know the difference lol I have mistaken. Mine asked to update for SDXC support thats why I said that.
That's because officially, the SDXC standard uses ExFAT, and in order to claim SDXC support on a device it needs to support ExFAT. But pretty much any device that says SDHC on it will work with a SDXC card that's been formatted to FAT32, as they're using the same hardware interface, the Switch is no different.
you think Fat32 will be okay for future usage ? (for most type of data) as it is limited to 4gb.
I am sure Nintendo already took that into account as there are many Switch games larger than 4GB. I haven't tested but I'm guessing it splits the games up.

you using fat32?
what you think about cluster size?

can i use any partition manager?
i have minitool (free) and unlocked version of easus partition master pro.

i also remember sdformatter came in handy for 3ds mSD formatting.

which should i use buddy, and what cluster size.
thanks!

cluster size, usually make it 32k or 64k depending on the console, some homebrew for example in the wii dont like anything higher than 32k... you can just leave it to the default, shouldn't really make a difference if ya using with official stuff. or if its not specified in tutorials.

use the tool i provided above, its a lot simplier...

I haven't even put a SD card in my Switch yet :P I haven't filled up the internal storage so I'm putting off getting a large MicroSD to go in the Switch.
Personally I've used minitool to format larger cards to FAT32 and it worked fine. Some people swear by guiformat. Either is probably fine. Some also use EASEUS Partition Master.
SDFormatter won't format larger cards to FAT32.

Cluster size I usually go with the default since I've never personally noticed much difference. However there are certain use cases where it matters, like playing GC games on Wii.
The reason I don't normally go with 32/64k is because it causes small files to take up more space and if you have a lot of files that can make a big difference.
But larger cluster size in theory does improve the speeds a little. Whether that will have a noticeable impact in this particular use case I can't say. Switch should be able to make better use of the faster UHS-I cards so cluster size might not matter as much as it did on the 3DS/Wii/Wii U as long as you have a fast card.
