thanks but I'm stuck at Section II - Updating the System I don't have internet at the moment to update can I skip this step update later? or I have to update now?
You can skip it, but that was the step I think might fix the black boxes, but you should be able to do the rest of the guide and update when you get WiFi.

When you update you going to be okay. That happen to me when I installed Luma3ds on a 8.1.0 system. I had boxes there. Those boxes I believe are just apps/demo that are not compatible with the lower firmware. I updated after installing the CFW with no problem and they turned into: Kirby Battle Royal Demo, Youtube, and a Salon Stylish demo game.....

Hello,

I'm certain that this question has been asked many times before. But I have read many thread and couldn't come up with a solid conclusion... I was hoping someone would be knowledgeable enough could guide me or correct my understanding.

Long story short... I accidentally updated a friend's old 3ds emunand bricking their gateway.... therefore trying to find a solution by either downgrading my n3ds to an older firmware or trying to downgrade/ remove the existing emunand.
My lovely friend is quite adamant on retaining their gateway usage opposed to upgrading to CFW even though it's eligible for soundhax/freeshop.

Gateway:
Flashcart which allows users to play backed-up games. Has Emunand support up to 11.2 and Sysnand support up to 10.7.

Downgrading:
From what I read, there were numerous ways to downgrade n3ds v.11.0 and 11.1 consoles using either safehax/ slowhax, memchunkhax or a DSiware to more hackable firmware (10.4 and below). But from what I have seen and read, all the listed methods required a 2nd modded system with CFW already installed in order to downgrade. There were several guides which mentioned soft-modding and downgrading without DSiware, but they all referenced Plailect/ 3dsguide website (instructions appeared to have removed - resulted in page not found).

SSU (Sysupdater) is typically the easiest way to downgrade to older firmware, but does not support firmware v.11 as there is currently no entry point.
I read Fasthax is used for 11.3 firmware - I haven't done much research into Fasthax as it I would have to update the console by game cartridge and even then, it is a partial update which could lead to a higher possibility of bricking the system.

Emunand Transfer:
I have not tried this and was only able to find one thread on it... Emunand transfer from one SD card to another. From what I understood, the emunand has to be active and accessible in order to do this and 2x 3ds (one willing to be updated to latest firmware as it uses the system transfer).
Read that removing the emunand was not recommended, not certain if you can overwrite an Emunand using CFW though.

Methods I tried to fix it...
I attempted reformatting the system and SD card to reset the emunand, of course, that failed. If I recalled, when creating an Emunand, it's like a "hardmod" to the system, not easily removable without damaging something else.
Beg for forgiveness and hunting for an affordable replacement....

Items at disposal
Gateway Card
numerous SD cards
Cubic Ninja (physical)
Ocarina of Time (physical - may not be eligible for OTThax)
r4i (non 3ds version)

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

You could probably use the R4i to install CFW via NTRBoot. Or, if you REALLY want to stretch it, use it to install CFW, then run sysUpdater to downgrade (will 100% work if you have CFW, regardless of system version), then uninstall CFW. You should really get CFW though, it's way better. Here's a (somewhat) complete list of all the benefits of CFW:
DLC Piracy
Installing titles to home menu, rather than a list of them
custom themes
rom hacks
hacking in games (item hacks in mk7, etc.) via NTR
cool homebrew programs
more piracy
more cool homebrew
no Gateway bricks
unbricking is not that difficult
and MANY more.

I'm just bringing this over to this thread.

I followed the last steps of this guide (Section 3 Step 9 https://3ds.guide/finalizing-setup). After launching the download play application I'm hit with the following error :

"An exception occurred
Processor: ARM11 (core1)
Exception type : prefetch abort (svcBreak)
Fault status: Debug event
Current process : loader (00000000000000)"

I have no clue what went wrong, since I followed the guide to a tee (except for maybe formatting the 3ds) and everything up to this point seemed to work.
I have the crash dump if needed.

Thanks in advance for helping a noob like me out!

EDIT : Forgot to mention that I'm using

Do you have the boot.3dsx on the root of your sd card?

Hi everybody! I have an R4i gold plus (The kind with the switch inside) and used it to install custom firmware and all that stuff. Everything with that is working great, but I am having trouble when switching it to DS mode. I installed the wood kernel for it and put a rom inside, but when I select the card on the home screen I just get a white screen and the only way to exit is to reset the console. I have a N3ds XL. Any ways to fix this?

Don't worry, your flashcart is not broken. Go here: https://3ds.guide/troubleshooting
And follow 'DS/DSi Functionality is broken.'
This happened to me as well.

Thanks for the quick reply! It seems like the links for the TWL FIRM on that website aren't working. I installed TWL off of the blog and the folder has 2 slot 1 launchers (.cia and .nds) do I just put one on the card and one on my ds?

The links are magnet links so you need a torrent client like Deluge to download them

Thanks for answering! I have followed it, but i have a doubt. While trying to install boot9strap (section II) I see the message "sighaxed firm was not installed" if i press a to continue, the ds shows the normal menu without any problems. Should I install sighax first right?
I know that the guide says that luma updates are only compatible with sighax but i dont see where is the file
