Let's say you despise Retroarch and want to use standalone emulators on your Windows 10 PC ... what do you install?

Primarily for NES, SNES, N64

Also interested in Genesis, Saturn, maybe PSX

I pretty much know already that Project64 is still king for N64. I'm interested in using Higan for snes, but maybe something else is preferred? And for NES, I dunno. I last was using Nestopia I think, few years back. I mostly play on real hardware (real, excluding the Everdrives. But they're real Everdrives lol), but I like to have the emus at-hand on the PC for occasional convenience, timekilling.

Thanks.

Most any NES emulator is decent these days, I use FCEUX myself, but NESTopia would be fine, too.

For SNES, if you have decent specs, use Higan for cycle accurate emulation. If not, SNES9x is good. Don't use ZSNES, as it's very outdated and inaccurate.

For N64, Mupen64 is actually king vs Project64, especially when you use GlideN64. https://m64p.github.io/ < Download that so you have a GUI and GlideN64 support added automatically.

EDIT: PS1 can be done via ePSXe just fine, though I know some people prefer Mednafen.

Saturn emulation = yabause only AFAIK. EDIT2: I forgot Mednafen added Saturn support a bit ago, which is supposed to work quite well. There's also SSF, which I completely forgot about. I believe SSF is considered "best", Mednafen is considered decent, and Yabause is considered eh these days.

Genesis = Kega Fusion.

Last time I played NES on PC (6 years ago or something), FCE Ultra X was one of the most popular ones, in fact I remember it being "too accurate" compared to Nesticle/Nester causing the world 0-1 bug with pirate SMB1 roms :P

The emulators I use are:
-Project64 (N64)
-MAME (Arcade)
-ePSXe (PSX)
-ZSNES (SNES)
-FCEUX (NES)

Also for Saturn you have yabause, but idk if it can run games decently or not, my PC isn't really powerful.

NESTOPIA (As alternative, FCEUX)
SNES9X
KEGA FUSION Emulates all sega systems except for saturn and dreamcast (recommend to use anything based on Genesis plus, support roms over 5MB for romhacks/homebrew)
Unofficial Yabuse (CHECK COMPATIBILITY FOR EACH GAME FIRST and download the latest version)
VBA
EPSXE Probably not recommended because of closed source? (Citation welcomed :ninja: )
PPSSPP

Alternatively you can use bizhawk instead of retrorach, or any of the other emulators TASvideos.org uses, all intended for realistic console accuracy. Also 3D game systems may not be as well developed as the 2D cart based ones, depends on game perhaps, not really sure on that one.

I tried it almost a year ago and performance was disappointing, compared to how I remember it from around 2005 (on a then considered cheap laptop) - NO$PSX works better for me, tbh
I use this on my pc and on my android, both works as normal and no problems either, but you can use this website if it helps, they rate the emulators here so you can choose which one is best. http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/psx/

PSX Emulator 1.13. No messing about with plugins or rendering back-ends. It just WORKS.

True, you don't get any swanky filters or super duper resolution but I tend not to use those anyway in favour of a more authentic old-school look.

None.
I got the original hardware, why should I emulate?

That's my answer too, most of the time. But when I'm waiting for a TV show or something to finish dl'ing on mega, it's nice to jump on a quick game of RC Pro Am, or Super Buster Bros., or whatever, without needing to get up.

Having everything connected to your telly and yourself being within arms reach from said telly also works ;p
