YookaSwitch.jpg

Backers rejoice! Almost seven months after other systems, Playtonic's crowd funded collect-a-thon Yooka-Laylee finally drops for Nintendo Switch on the 14th of December. It comes boasting polish and optimisation for play on the go, as well as support for playing with a single Joy-Con across each of its eight multiplayer minigames for an optimal fun to budget ratio. This release is exclusively digital, with plans for a Switch physical edition unknown at this time.

Will you be picking this up when it launches?

Ah, okay. Didn't enjoy Banjo Kazooie at all, I take it?
To be fair, neither did I. It was an exercise in frustration, I'm not a fan of collect-a-thons, and the art style wasn't really my thing. I'm sure a lot of people had a similar experience with the game.

Kid me liked it better. That's the interesting thing about Banjo-Kazooie though, it got high praise and it was a really innovative/unique game for the time. If B-K had been released no different today (except better graphics perhaps), then it'd still receive mostly 7s and 7.5s just like Yooka-Laylee did. It's got just enough flaws and minor annoyances to keep it out of Mario's league.

To be fair, modern Mario games are cookie cutter too. The most innovative ones, like Sunshine, weren't received particularly well. Most Mario games these days just try to replicate whatever worked in the 90's.

Neither Mario+Rabbids nor Odyssey are concepts that have been done with Mario before, so I'm not sure what you mean. Compared to something like Yooka-Laylee that copy-pasted the Banjo formula including its flaws, new Mario games are very innovative.

Mario+Rabbids slipped my mind, it is innovative and more appealing than Odyssey to me, but I detest Rabbids, so I'm in two minds about it. Odyssey is a poor man's Mario 64, just with a different gadget - 64 had wings, Odyssey has the hat, that's the way I see it.

Well yeah, Sunshine had a water jetpack and Galaxy had spherical planets. These seemingly minor changes make them play completely different from one another, though.

Sunshine has a completely different premise, so does Galaxy, but whatever floats your boat. It's a cookie-cutter Mario game, you know it when you play it.

If by premise you mean the setting, then sure. Things varied from level to level in Sunshine, though, just as they do in Galaxy and Odyssey. A "cookie-cutter" Mario game by your definition seems to be any 3D Mario game with tons of variety. By no means is that a bad formula to carry on, going by review scores.

Yeah, going by review scores every Nintendo game is the second coming of Christ, including those that are objectively garbage. If variety is great then why won't you add some baked beans to your milk and cereal? Both are breakfast items, it should totally work. It's the exact same game plus a new gadget, there's really nothing special about it, you either like the franchise or you don't. I stopped going by review scores years ago once the realisation that reviewers are inherently biased and write for a specific audience that expects a specific review dawned upon me. The only way for a review to be even remotely accurate is to find a specific reviewer with a proven track record of enjoying the games you enjoy and using their content as your measuring stick - I'm yet to meet a reviewer that meets this rather simple qualification. Most of my favourite games in the last couple of years received mediocre scores, either because people were racing to hate them or because they were new IP's so they could be nit-picked to death. Thanks, but no thanks - I'll just pick the demo up and judge things myself, it costs me nothing. Worst-case scenario I can look up gameplay.

Well, you're right Mario Odyssey is a mass-produced game, but what good matrix they used to produce it, the mould was well crafted with each new game being like a perfect fine confectionery produced from it. They have created such a good numerical control algorithm that every metaphorical aluminium block ends up in a perfect engine that powers the experience, all of this in strict compliance with a rigorous set of ISO9001 norms to assure everyone can experience the same level of quality, and all of this thanks to the sharpness and endurance of the well designed Nintendo cookie-cutter. /s

PS: For some reason I hate the "cookie-cutter" term/analogy, it sounds too stuck-up or hipster to me.

PS2: In case it is not clear from the post, I agree the game is a mass-produced game that doesn't really risk too much for originality (I don't think that is bad anyway), it is only that I hate term cookie-cutter.

while odiseey isnt as good as mario64 is very very far from being a poor mans game... the issue with odissey to e is too much power moons per level, while on sm64,sunshine,galaxy 1 and 2(i dont count 3d world) there were at most like 10 12 major collectibles per level at best here we have like 84 in one 70 on another and so on, it made them loose importance or impact the stars and shinies had becuase they were harder and fewer.

to me the 3d marios ranked by my preference are
SM64»SMG2»SMG»SMO»SMS»SM3DW

Super mario 3d world for me its the porrer 3d mario if you arent doing multiplayer the game is just boring af to me, the issue with sunshine is too much reliance on the water jetpak, seriously i would be fine if i only needed afew times but not every single level,to get preety much all the shines you probably need to on one point of the otehr to pass something to get to the shine, the best part of sunshine were the levels where they took it away.while you need cappy on odissey to get some power moons you can play alot of time and get manny moons without possesing an enemy.

Yooka laylee has nothing bad going for it, at this point whats pissing me off is digital only, if by next year we dont ear about a phisical version i will probably get the ps4 version becuase i hate digital only games.

Also i love when people say nintendo milks its franchices, srs mario 64 was released on 1996 and we are in 2017 almost 18 so 21 years and we got 6 fully 3d mario games when other companys that released games not even 10 yo have already way more games than mario ever did on not even half of the time.

Mario is one of the most milked franchises in the world, there hasn't been a year without several releases featuring Mario since the character's inception. They shove him wherever they can, and while admittedly many of those are re-releases on different platforms and different genres of games, there's only so much of a mascot you can take.

im talking about 3d mario games not spin off games.

look at any franchise like sports games, or assasins creed, or even ratchet and clank, uncharted they get so manny games in such short time and im only counting main games not spin off games like racing, tennis, whatever sport or party games.

If you take sports, party and random mario spinoffs, mario has a very few main games on the main genre(platforming) for the time he has been released, specialy 3d platforming ones.

Its basicaly one or 2 per console generation at best.

Is there a way to turn off the "voices"? That's the only thing that's turning me off from buying this game. The game seems pretty cool but I cringe so damn hard when characters talk. Why did they think that gibberish was a good idea? :wtf:

Because they had gibberish in the Banjo games.

How do you even define what is and is not a spin-off game with Mario? You can't simultaneously claim that NSMB was not a main game in the series on the Wii, but it was totally a main game on the DS. I treat all Mario platforming games as Mario platforming games. Let's not pretend that there's any continuity here one could "spin-off" from, they're all Mario games, some are just smaller than others.
