Looking to purchase a hackable PS3. I have read a lot about the shoddy soldering job Sony did with their phat systems. Seems to be a high failure rate/YLOD with these systems the older they get. Did Sony fix or improve this issue with their newer slim systems? Are slims generally going to be more durable or longer lasting than phats when it comes to the soldering integrity?

I would say get a slim for the reliability and use this picture to see if the serial number on the console is supported. I still have my slim after 7 years and it works but i am more worried about the dvd drive failing because of the age.

I'll be purchasing a 2001A slim. Are you saying to get the slim just because it's a newer model, or do you happen to know anything quantitatively about soldering integrity between the slim and phat? Wondering if anybody out there has knowledge or specifics about the GPU/CPU soldering regarding the phat and slim systems.

I did edit my post but for the reliability a slim will be a better choice I've known people who have fat models that somehow survived but have a failed DVD drive and I know people who have fat models that have just recently failed and I have my slim model for 7 years and it's still working just the DVD drive is concern cuz it's getting old

That's good to know. Thanks!
