At this point, with OP not caring about cheats from what ive read. There really isn;t any point of staying with gateway period. They should migrate everything over to sysnand, be done with it, and not worry about losing anything when ninty decides to throw updates.
Im not saying he should go with Gateway, Im just saying that its possible to this date and explaining how to do it. His own choice.

If I need to update it manually to 11.2 then I can just use this method for updating to 11.6.
This should be just Gateway mode the app says that I doesn't must to run in Gateway sysnand mode.
11.2 is the highest you can be on with Gateway. I told you this already. If you want to ask for advice please actually take the time to read what people tell you instead of wasting our time.

That so called "patch" on that German site may be the same thing as described by me... just maybe easier or automatically. But Im not sure..... I need to check it.

By updating just nver, most apps will act as you are on the latest firmware and work and system settings will show up 11.6.... but some other apps/games are checking for something else.

And I have told that there is a way to bypass it. You're avatar match you perfectly lol.
I don't know if some games can't detect it I'll wait until Ultra Sun&Moon and see if they can play it.

You will software brick your emunand if you update GW emunand to 11.6 (I mean fully, normal aka any legit way), and if you update sysnand to 11.6 you will lose Gateway completely.
WRONG. I use Gateway every day, and I'm on a "fully legit" 11.6 sysnand. You need to install the latest b9s, then upgrade sysnand in Luma. Luma can then chainload bootctr9, which can boot gateway.firm. Just like I said the first reply to this thread. Know what you're talking about before posting. And maybe read the other replies first.

You won't be in 11.6 when you're in Gateway mode. Otherwise you'd just have a black screen.

I know this. @deSSy2724 keeps saying that you can't use Gateway at all if you have a 11.6 sysnand. This is false. Of course, you'll be booting Gateway into 11.2 emunand (or 11.6 franken-emunand), but you don't "lose Gateway completely".

Edit: What really ticks me off is the fact that I was the first reply to this thread and I explained as much in that first reply.

Edit2: Having trouble locating the thread here at the moment (and I'm busy at work) so here's a link to a payload for use with bootctr9. Just don't ever try to launch GW in sysnand mode. Only use emunand. If you try to boot GW sysnand on 11.6, it will overwrite b9s. Then you really are stuck without ntrboot.

Ah gotcha, I understand now.

But yeah the main reason that I'm staying on Gateway is for his cheats and I don't want to lose data on my games.

If you export the save files with the guide I linked you won't lose any data. You can also cheat with NTR (slightly less easily). I think the trade off is worth it to avoid the trouble Gateway brings, but up to you.

Quantum, sorry to hijack a post on this thread, but where is the save file export guide link you mentioned? I don't see a link from you in the thread.
At this stage I would be happy to just be done with Gateway on my N3ds system. Have a bunch of .3ds games on it with various saves that I really didn't want to lose, but if there's a way to transfer them to a standard luma sys/emunand (whatever it's supposed to be) i'd be all over that. Using a luma updated old 3dsx system to play new stuff, but most of my content is on my N3ds Gateway based system. I miss having the improved 3D tracking and such. I'll miss GW cheats (offline of course) but i'd rather have an 'all-in-one' solution at this point, rather than bouncing between 2 systems.

In that case, I need to figure out how to clone my N3ds's microsd card to a 128gb card, so I can bring over the Gateway save states + games.

Sorry, maybe I thought I linked it and I didn't! In any case here you go: https://gbatemp.net/threads/importing-gateway-saves-to-cia-games.425743
Why not just backup the saves on the N3DS, then get B9S and Luma and stop using the Gateway cart? No need to have to use the old 3DS XL if you don't want to.

I made a tutorial on this as well, but it's on another site. it's pretty much the same stuff though. I managed to recover every save but one (Etrian Odyssey 4). however, I think the issue was the actual cart save. it somehow became corrupted.

That's my goal. To get everything on the old 3ds xl over to the N3ds. I'm just not sure how realistic that is, and if there's any issues bringing Gateway based saves (practicaly everything on the o3ds) over to the n3ds. And is it correct that the godmode9 or whatever it's called, allow you to easily to a 1:1 micro sd clone? So say 64gb into a 128gb card?

If you want to move your data you'll need to do a system transfer, which means putting the SD card from the source into the target, so no need to clone anything (GodMode9 wouldn't be able to do that anyway).

But what will get wiped from the target? Everything?
