Depends on how long Nintendo decides to push a very obsolete piece of hardware. I don't see any new features being added, just more "stability" updates.

You're asking people to predict the future..... I would say through observation and knowing the N2DS just came out this year, we'll probably seeing updates until the end of 2018 at the very least. I'd assume NInty would want the N2DS relevant for at least 2 years before they pull support. By that time most customers would have a Switch if they ever start focusing on it's library.

Who knows, The Big N does still have games being pushed into 2018. Although it would be rather annoying to see new updates when they already announced that they don't plan on removing the Miiverse icon :glare:
At the same time I know Nintendo is most likely going to keep desperately trying to fight against kernel exploits, even if they can't win this war.

Is there a way to hide it if you're running CFW. It's gonna drive me crazy :/

What are you trying to hide and from who? Because if you're talking just make everything look stock it's simple enough. However hiding it from Nintendo is a much more complicated task. Nintendo could easily implement a wide range of checks to determine if it's running stock or not. Hiding it from them would require re enabling rsa signature checks and flushing the use log. You'd also need to spoof the logs etc so that homebrew titles don't show. Beyond that they can always start testing the games installed/tickets against there records to determine if a game you have installed as a digital title was legitimately purchased. In short it's near impossible to do and no tools currently exist to do any of it so you'd have to do so manually/write your own.

If so how many more firmware updates do you think it'll get
Nobody knows, but considering they can't really do anything about ntrboothax, and the sole purpose of most updates have been to patch exploits, I don't think we're going to see much. If they release a new hardware revision of the 3DS that isn't susceptible to ntrboothax, then we will probably see more updates, but I don't think that's likely.

this will never happen because it will cost millions more to produce a new line of consoles with a new SoC. Nintendo doesn't want to spend that kind of money on a system near end-of-life.

Do remember it is Nintendo we're talking about though

do you seriously think Nintendo is going to waste money like that ever on the 3DS? it's near the end of its life. fixing the bootrom and creating new SoCs is expensive. if this happened years earlier, then it might have been fixed.

figure out how the layout is stored, and compare it with KOR HOME Menu (9.0+ layout, no miiverse)
I might have to poke around one of my Goat units to see what I can do with this information.
Although I am pretty sure someone already has done this, considering your rather frank message :P It will still be a fun thing to do on this weekend.

Nintendo already made the 2DS XL, they aren't going to spend more money on a system this late into the game.

layouts are probably stored in bclyt, a format which still doesn't seem fully documented. but you could try anyway if you want.
