There are a lot of cheap memory cards with FreeMcBoot pre-installed on eBay. Can generic memory cards be used with it, or will they fail/only last a little while?

The memory card I'm looking at is 8MB if that helps. It DOES NOT say Magic Gate on it though if the picture is any indicator. It just says 8MB MEMORY CARD.

hey will work just fine. My recommendation tho is to buy one legit mem card, and use that you bought with pre-installed with FMCB to install on the legit one, keep it as a backup.

I was thinking as long as it runs I could copy it over. How much space does FMCB take up?

Before buying, consider alternative options.

For example, if you have action replay or the HDD adapter/HDD, there are ways to run FMHD/FMCB.

I've currently got FMCB, FMHD and ODDOSD running on my fat (I also use it to backup saves to the internal hdd).

Don't have the action replay or HDD adapter. I only got my PS2 like 8 years ago just for a few games (had one when I was a little kid but it broke).

From my experience, unfortunately it depends. Most of them work fine, but some of them have slower chips and Free MC boot is not loaded in time to make it work. The only ones that I found guaranteed that doesnt work is when a MC is bigger than 8MB. The PS2 system, although it can see more than 8MB on every device, it can take longer to do so, that's why Sony never released bigger Memory Cards, to avoid instability with slower cards. Their licensed Memory Cards that were bigger used bank switching (it has a button to switch between bank 1 and 2, it was like having two 8MB Memory Cards in one instead of full 16MB) to hold more memory instead.

I've never had luck with 3rd party ones. They always end up corrupting stuff because of the compression. Though officially licensed niko 8mbs work fine.

I've never bothered with a larger card. You can use virtual memory cards with open ps2 loader.
