Ive got some roms but I'm not sure if they belong to genesis, game gear, master system, etc...
Does anyone know how to distinguish the file extension formats to know which belong with what system? .bin, .sms, .smd, etc...

Hi.
Usually bin is for megadrive(genesis) sms for Sega Master System and smd for Sega MegaDrive.

.bin could be anything. It's a generic file extension supported by most emulators/platforms. All of my Genesis games have the .gen extension, I guess if you're not sure what platform a ROM is for, you'll just have to search the name of the game or load it up and check, I would suggest renaming the .bin files to a more fitting file extension like the rest of the games, or at least organizing them in separate folders based on system so they're easier to keep track of.

The "extensions" don't really mean anything, they're just descriptive, the file itself is a simple binary file. Extensions exist solely for the sake of identifying a file type, they serve no other function. They're self-explainatory, here's a quick run-down:
  • .SMD - Sega Mega Drive (PAL or NTSC-J) ROM dump
  • .GEN - Sega Genesis (NTSC-U) ROM dump
  • .SMS - Sega Master System (Any Region) ROM dump
  • .32x - Sega 32X (Any Region) ROM dump
  • .ROM - Generic ROM file (Could be anything)
  • .BIN - Generic binary (Could be anything)
  • .ISO - Disc Image file (Sega CD, Sega Saturn or Dreamcast, Any Region)
  • .BIN + .CUE - Disc Image file pair (See above)
  • .CDI - DiscJuggler Disc Image (See above, most commonly Sega Saturn, Any Region)
  • .GDI - GD-ROM Image file (Dreamcast, Complete GD-ROM rip, Any Region)
I believe that's all of them.

Is megadrive and genesis the same console? Just a different name used depending on region.... japan / north america. Are the roms the same? (besides region exclusives)

They're exactly the same with one slight difference - PAL systems run at 50Hz wheras NTSC-U/NTSC-J run at 60Hz, so PAL consoles run ever so slightly slower than NTSC ones. Other than that, the systems are identical and the only reason why the name "Genesis" was used in North America was a trademark issue.

Correction

.BIN - Sega Genesis (NTSC-U) ROM dump

.bin simply refers to either a binary file or a binary executable. There is no universal way to identify if it is a game rom, a windows application extension, or something else completely.
It could be that photo you made in DOS that has been sitting on that floppy that you could never figure out what it was XD
