Guys look at it this way: cartridges can only hold certain amount of data but if they exceed the limit: no way of actually putting the whole game on one cartridge. That's where additional memory comes in, which in this case is Nintendo Switch one. You can either save to Switch or SDCard.

This allows for more possibility's and it might interest other developers to not question developing on Nintendo Switch and to actually do it since they can easily put whole game in parts and call it a day.

Really, and SDCards aren't that expensive now. The only expensive SDCard is 512GB one which costs more than Switch itself.
It's not size limitation what is happening here, it's the expensiveness of the switch cartridges. 2K file size is only about 25gb and switch cards can hold up to 32gb of data.

Also 32gb is a big joke, since bigger sized cards could be possible if nintendo changes the nand distributor to someone less expensive.

Each sd card will be tired to the Switch console you original used because of encryption. This is exactly how it works on the 3DS.

do u mean only one can be used or multiple sd cards on the same switch? I was thinking about what a pain it would be not being able to use a usb hdd considering you're limited with sd cards not only by size but price wise.

Expect a major shitstorm once hacker find dummy files in Switch games to artificially increase the file size. People will have to buy SD cards and because most customers are uninformed parents, they will buy official Nintendo licensed Sandisk SD cards (which means more profit for Nintendo). This is all calculated by Nintendo.

You can use multiple microsd cards on the Switch of course. The thing is that if you ever do a System Format, the encryption keys change and your microsd cards will not work anymore. Saves should be fine as they are saved to the internal 32GB NAND. So if you plan to use multiple cards to store pics and games, don't System Format and you will be fine.

As for USB HDD, Nintendo has probably not written the USB drivers to make that possible. We can always dream though.

I read an article on temp where Nintendo said "maybe" with regards to usb support. it's certainly possible, but maybe they're afraid of piracy after what happened with the wii u. btw, it uses micro sd or full sd cards? the largest micro sd I have is 128GBs; the largest full sd card I have is 256GBs (in my wii u). the micro sd is in my vita and 3ds since I have two of them. :P

this has nothing to do with drm, lol
actually it is wait till nintendo start doing this forcing you to go online to get the rest of the game. it's to deter hax plain and simple has nothing to do with carts being expensive or not being able to store enough data on them. :P

The Switch uses microsd cards. The slot is underneath the kickstand. Weird place for it to be for sure. It couldn't be next to the gamecard slot like on the N2DS XL. Sigh.

I disagree. Compared to pressed Bluray discs, NAND carts are expensive to manufacture. Bluray games cost about $1 to manufacture. NAND is at least 10x that for the same capacity. If a game is both on Switch and PS4/Xbox One at the same price, then the publisher would prefer you not buy the game for Switch due to profit margins.

thank u for this. I plan to buy a switch one day. I'm eagerly awaiting the new Mario game in October. I have the amiibos preordered.

To be honest, this sounds like Nintendo covering their asses for things already implemented. For instance, it saying the need for a card with a physical game could be talking about DLC. Can't get the full experience without the DLC, right?

What if this is being done because some games like.....Skyrim......will allow DLC/mods that are going to take up more than what's allowed in internal storage?

Then you better update or buy a second switch.....

i dont even play sports games

I don't see it that way. Everyone has known since the PS3/Xbox 360 era that game updates and DLC are separate from the discs. No retail 3DS game has pulled this stunt of "well the complete game is not on the cartridge, download it from eshop." This is just Nintendo covering its 3rd party publishers' asses for being too cheap to put the entire game on the cartridge.

I dont either. Of course ea will do this. then they will blame nintendo when it dont sell just like they did with their shitty wii u ports... Imagine if there was no EA. id be amazing
(read in a deep movie voice) in a world withount ea:
consumers would get, free dlc,
full games not just a part of it
new stuff not just a hd remaster every year where more of the game is cut out
no forced online
and we wouldnt get this

This is how I feel about modern gaming in general.
