Hi,

I can't access to my External HDD (with Y-Cable) data anymore... I don't know how it happened. I changed the external case.

The LED still turns on but my games don't show up and where I go into Data Settings, it shows an error message... :(

How could I recover my data?

Thanks!

Is it possible you turned a game off while it was saving? Other than that, I've had SSB4 corrupt itself and it affected other games. If it's possible, add another game and see what happens.

As for recovery, I took it as a loss and re-installed on a new drive.

Dammit... I think I'm gonna sell my Wii U... Isn't there anyway to clone my data?

It is not even recognized when I plug it when the Wii U is on :(

I wouldn't do that--that can corrupt data. I wouldn't say losing all of your data is a reason to sell your Wii U when HDDs do die. You can try to plug another HDD or flash in while your problematic HDD is plugged in and see what happens.

I don't wanna restart everything
I tried another USB Drive and it worked so I guess my HDD is dead

EDIT: ok so I'll try Ftpiiu everywhere to recover my saves, which version should I use? 0.4u2 says "can be used specifically with cbhc 1.2 or newer" but I don't use cbhc nor haxchi..

You could try to use your dying HDD until you get a lucky strike and copy all the saves to internal or flash drive. Or just look at like "it was inevitable and good thing it happened now, rather than later."

Alternatively, maybe someone might be able to fix it? Maybe the manufacturer will help you out? I called iecko about their 4gb flash drive and they told me I could have an 8gb to replace the other. I didn't get the data from the 4gb, but the call was worth it.

I don't think it would happen someday hahaha... I don't care about the HDD, just the data... Ftpiiu everywhere cant read my HDD so I think it's dead

If you changed your external case that can very well be the problem.
Not all external cases (aka USB to SATA adapters) work well with the Wii U.
It is not an HDD problem, but an incompatibility problem of the USB-SATA adapter on the case circuitry.

Try with another case or adapter.
I've experienced this before.

Yet they could have used a different adapter.
Normally those cases are made to be used on a PC, so no one cares if they change chip A for the new variant chip A1, that is still compatible with a PC but not with a Wii U (they probably didn't even notice).

your hdd isnt dead, its because you changed case, i have done the same thing:
i was previously using a hard drive dock and then i switched to a case, my drive wasnt recognized by the wiiU anymore, and it didnt even asked me to format
so by luck i was having another hard drive of same size, so i plugged back my wiiU drive in the dock instead of the case, and then i plugged the other hard drive into the case, and copied everything on it

basically i think that the encryption of the hard drive is based both on the hard drive model and on the casing, so if you change the drive or the case it wont work anymore

i don't know, the old one stopped to work so i thought it was a case problem (it worked during like 5 months)

i changed the case because i was thinking the problem came from there

oh sorry, i misunderstood, i thought that your problem come after changing your case

well, is your hard drive is seen on a computer? (even if empty and stuff) because i think someone have made a tool that allow to read the datas on it (but read only) if you have some backup info of your wiiU
https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-wfs-fuse-mount-wii-u-usb-drives-on-linux-and-mlc-dumps.478835/
maybe the wiiU cant read it but you will be able to in linux
yeah my computer detects it but it doesn't tell me to format (it does with another Wii U pendrive I tested), I'll try this thanks!!

I made an image of the HDD then formatted it and tried to restore with USBIT and HDD Raw Copy Tool and it didn't work :(
Though, once formatted by windows, my hard drive is recgonized by the Wii U and I can format it.

Format your Harddrive using the Wii U.
(but then idk if we can reinject the integrity of the dumped WFS into the HDD)

thanks but I already tried this (I made like 3 backup-restore) and it didn't work, I'm doing a 4th one with another tool :(

so I found something about decrypting my USB using OTP and SEEPROM files on my PC! Is there a safe way to get these ones?

"decrypting" Nope, you can inject but you cannot recover any data from it. If you are talking about WFS Block Injector of course.

Uh, really? Why is there a "Dump USB device" function then?
I saw there are two versions: wfs-extractor and wfs-file-inject so that's kinda weird if you can't dump data from USB...

Look at this thread though!

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
