Hello
So I bought a used XBOX 360 slim (4GB) at my local GameStop for 29€. The console is updated to D:17511 and has a LiteOn optical drive. I think it's a Corona (v2 or v4), but I am not completely sure. The power supply they gave me can output 9.86A on the +12V line but the XBOX case comes from a Trinity, and a sticker is covering the serial and MFR. Anyway, supposing the console is a Corona v2/v4, what hack do you suggest to do?
Actually, I am looking for a modification that allows me to
- play backupped games from an external HDD, connected via USB
- run homebrew (emulators mostly)
I don't really mind about XBOX Live, since 360s are on their end of life. Anyway, let me know if it's possible to keep the possibility to connect to the XBOX Live, without getting banned. It would be nice to have the choice to run the console as a hacked one or as a legit one.

Also, the hack should be cheap. I have soldering skills and aready have a SPI/JTAG programmer.

Thank you in advance

Check first what motherboard you have, so we can work out a complete roadmap for you

coronaguide.jpg

If none of this applies to your board, you probably have a Trinity board (which would be good).
They can be identified like this:

XDoKPiZ.jpg

Coronas don't have the HANA chip

RGH works on all systems yes.

However, if you want to set up a Dual NAND system, you're spending a lot of money.
As for emulators, they're... pathetic in compatibility and availability.

I've just disassembled it. I can confirm it's a Trinity. Optical drive model is DG-16D4S.

Why would it be so expensive?

While waiting a response from you, I want to thank you two for the help you are giving me.

A Dual NAND chip isn't cheap.
You also need to fracture in the costs of the RGH chip as well.

Not to mention that you need to keep one HDD off off Live and continuously need to swap between drives.
Whilst it isn't much of a problem if you USB load everything (which I advise against) but it can be problematic.
Oh, and you can't sign into your profile on Freestyle Dash/Aurora/XeXMenu or use your profile on emulators.
Microsoft can and will ban accounts for that.

The X360ACE v3 seems quite cheap. I believe the problem is the NAND (or PCB?) cost. Perhaps I could make a board on my own, since - actually - they are just adapters.

My idea was to use a USB drive because it's quicker to load contents there (from a PC to the drive). An internal hard drive needs an external adapter and it's not easily removable.

Is this a problem? I mean, what does it imply?

Idk how good your electronics skills are but it's not just an adapter.
It's also a microcontroller which switches between the NAND on the 360 and the NAND on the chip.
Only Dual NAND chips out there are the Cygnos360 and Xecuter DemoN.
And both are intricate designs.

Actually, USB is slower then the internal drive.
Remember, a 360 accepts 2.5 inch SATA drives.
Easily accessible via the bottom door.

It is a problem, like I said, MS can and will ban accounts and xboxes for this.
If you want to play games on the RGH side, you'll have to sign in in the game itself and sign out when you're done.
To prevent accidental sign in of your profile on FSD/Aurora/XeXmenu etc, keep it on a flash drive and unplug it when you're on FSD etc.

Some of the newer glitch chips take care of the switching, check the vid I posted for OP above, it shows one of these new style NAND switching methods.

Yes I was referring to the Viper Dual NAND used in that video.

Yes I know SATA is faster. I said it is quicker when you need to plug it out from XBOX and connect it to a computer. In any case, it's not a problem for me to connect the hard drive as internal, if you really suggest me to do so. My worry is that backupped content on the drive can make me ban the account when booting the console on the "legit side".

Is it mandatory to sign in for playing a game? I believed (don't know actually, never used one) no account was needed to locally play games on a custom dashboard.

Then a chip might be enough.

Swapping the HDD would solve that issue.
A 1TB internal drive for the RGH side won't show up on the legit side anyway as it lacks the HDDSS.

Yes, a lot of games require you to sign in to earn achievements.
Some older games didn't need signing in but I'm unsure if it saves or not.
Hence I said "sign in in the game and sign out when you're done playing" ;p

Thank you.
Just a couple of other questions to understand better the situation.

If I use a non-MS hard drive for playing on the RGH side, does the lack of the HDDSS allow me to keep the drive in, even when playing on the legit side?

When I am on the RGH side and I want to play a game, and that game wants me to sign in, can I sign in locally or do I have to connect the console to the Internet?
If I can sign in locally, is it a problem for the legit side? Perhaps it does exist a kind of "guest" account to use.
I am asking this because I really don't mind about achievements. You know, I just want to play a game! :D

I've never tested that out in all honesty.
But in theory, it shouldn't initialize.

Nope, you can just sign in locally.
360 does have cloud storage but savegames and profiles are still stored offline.
Hence it's best to use a flashdrive for your savegames and profiles.

If you just want to play a game then I'd just go with RGHing the box.
Dual NAND isn't needed then anymore as LiNK allows you to System link certain games.
Essentially, playing multiplayer with other LiNK users.

Thanks again for your help.
Didn't know about LiNK. Well, I think I will order the X360ACE, and while waiting for it to arrive I will decide if I will do a dual NAND setup or not.

You can always get a Dual NAND setup in the future if needed.

Make sure you follow me tut about installing FSD.
It'll aid in complete setup of a new harddrive for usage of 360 and Xbox games.

You can substitute FSD for Aurora and use an updated Dashlaunch, downloaded from homebrew-connection.org by placing them on a USB drive and chosing those instead of the ones from the ISO.

Sorry to bother you guys again.

I have just finished to test my freshly RGH'd XBOX. At last I decided to do the dual NAND setup and everything works great so far.
Note that I followed the youtube guide iCEQB posted some posts above.
I just have a couple of questions:

1. In order to be completely safe from being banned, is it advisable to change KV to the RGH side with a fake KV (or an already banned one)?

2. On the RGH side, dashboard is still the original one. How can I install Aurora?

3. Can I reassemble my XBOX? Should I solder a pin header to the X360ACE and/or NAND in order to be accessible outside the console?

Again, thank you for your help

1. Yes. Use a banned KV in the build to avoid any accidental connections to XBL. Dashlaunch does an excellent job of blocking live access, but extra precautions can’t hurt.

2. Head over to Realmodscene and download Aurora, unzip it, put it on a thumb drive, and move it over to the 360 HD in xexmenu.

3. You don’t really need to re-flash the Ace if your boot times are good as is. As for the NAND, you can flash builds from the USB ports after hacking with Simple NAND Flasher. You should also be able to reassemble the console barring any physical interference from the chips or wiring.

Thank you.
I am a bit confused. First of all, does the HDD need to be formatted from the Xbox? I am asking this because I only see tutorials involving xexmenu in copying files (such as Dashlaunch, Aurora, etc.). I am assuming the hard drive is using a particular file structure that only xexmenu can manage.
Secondly, what is the best way to replace my KV with the banned one?
