Long story short: it's so bad Destructoid is at risk of being sued by Gordon Ramsey for plagiarism.

As many of you might be aware of, Nintendo discovered a very novel method for making assloads of money: Stick games from a very old console into a very high quality scaled replica which can play those games in perfect condition. This was noticed by both the current bearer of the Atari name and Sega.

Enter the Sega Genesis Flashback. A 720p console with wireless controllers, and can still play your old collection of Genesis games that you still somehow have.

This is something that sounds like it can compete with the NES Classic, and even has some perks over the Classic. No dealing with freakishly short controller cables or being stuck with only 30 games (unless you hack it). This thing can run any game for the genesis, and even comes with 85 games!

And that's where the problems start. Yes there's all the Sanic games you remember, and despite the absence of Eccho the Dolphin titles there's still classics such as Mortal Combat (though you have to dig for it in the "Other" folder), but then you get a bunch of weird shit like Adventure in the Park, which never released for the original Genesis. The controller uses non-rechargeable batteries which require a screwdriver to replace. Instead of a microUSB power cable which you could literally plug into your TV, it uses yet another connector style.

All of which could maybe be forgiven if the actual playing of games was great. Unfortunately that is not the case.

The system suffers from frame drops, that can make the more faster-paced Sonic games a far less satisfying experience. If you want to actually play a cartridge, you have to reboot the console every time you insert one or take one out. And if the old contacts on that game make connection difficult, you will end up doing multiple reboot cycles until it works.

Sega took notice of the NES Classic and proclaimed this to be it's competitor. Yes, it's better the the other atGames crap we've had to deal with, but not by much.

Wait...so sega can't create a console that is capable of playing their own old games properly?

(yes, I know: the original didn't exactly had HDMI output, but jeez...I wouldn't think that would be rocket science to pull off)

You forgot to mention it's 150 dollar price tag.... lol and the wireless controllers use IR so they suck pretty bad.

For just a bit more you could just get a Shield TV and get 1080P emulation with or with out filters on multiple systems and yeah...

It's a shame that if you want good emulation you have to go 3rd party... Nintendo is so far the only company that has done this at least acceptable, might not be perfect but it's pretty good (now if they would just make enough to meet demand....)

Sega didn't make it, some generic knock off company did.

At least 2. Seems it takes about as long as it does to boot RetroPi for a cheap SD card.

I would say my Shield TV (Pro model so it's got a hard drive to boot from) takes a bit to boot up, but I only ever put it to sleep... The only time it actually boots is if I am trying to do something dumb and I crash the launcher or something.

Swapping games, I never have to reboot.

I would say "Oh maybe with a software update this could be fixed!" but I learned my lesson with cheap electronics a long time ago on that one... IF it happens at all it will be because some kind hearted crazy hacker fixes it for us.

Kind of expected this, heck I warned as many people as I could when I heard it was created by ATGames. They all thought I was just trying to get them not to buy them because they think I hate sega. Next thing I know, those same people are complaining.

Are there any reports of horrible sound?

Probably the one decent thing about it... They did actually make the sound better. Still not as good as a model 1 launch system but not like the nails on the chalkboard that ATGames is known for either. lol

I know that many people are pissed at AtGames but has anybody tried TALKING to them? Maybe if enough people presented them with a list of things they expect before purchase, maybe that company will take things to heart. I feel sorry for Sega fans that were really waiting on this device but I feel that from what I saw it's still a good basis for something better. The menu looks really clean, the device looks like a legit Genesis and the thing does have wireless controllers and support form game cartridges. It's not a complete lost cause. Maybe we can get AtGames and Sega to improve on things instead of calling it quits.

These things existed long before the NES Classic.

It's ATGames, not Sega. If Sega were in charge, they'd at least have better sound emulation and proper frameskip, etc. AtGames (or AssGames), wouldn't know how to write a proper emulator even if they got a million dollars.
