I don't care about piracy, neither do I really care about pirates.
I do despise people who advocate piracy and think it's no big deal/people who are proud they pirate.

On the other side, I can't stand people who treat people who pirate impossible-to-obtain games like shit. New games, I can see that being an issue, and it is, but for older out of print games, I really couldn't care less about. We can agree to disagree, It was never my intent to upset you :(

You didn't lol.

I'm merely saying piracy is wrong, no matter how one tries to put it.
That you pirate is your business.
There's not a single person on this earth who doesn't pirate (except for old ladies in retirement homes prolly)

Okay, making sure. There are people on the internet who don't pirate who not only look down, but try to act superior in every way to those who do pirate. I can't stand sycophantic BS like that.

Even they pirate.
Be it a piece of music, telly show or even a picture.
Something they have has a copyright on it.

I look down on fools who think it's cool to pirate, people who advocate piracy like it's nothing.
People who pressure others into pirating.

Come on, you've known me for quite a while ;p

I just do it because I'm sick of games' licenses expiring, people who inflate the price 500% its original MSRP, I look down on people who scalp and exploit eBay users. I pirate Snes games primarily, because Nintendo refuses to release 90% of the good games on the VC, the list goes on. Emulators on the VC aren't that great, either, but I'll save that for a blog or something. Point is, once the Switch is hacked, I hope it gets good emulators lol.

Why not get the SNES games from a used gamestore, download a pirated copy and inject it in a VC?

It circumvents paying scalpers and pretty much circumvents piracy as well ;p

Anyway, we're derailing this thread with this argument.

Everyone pirates. Movies, Music etc.

I wouldn't get hyped untill the online service is up and running. This is just conjecture but chances are you're not going to be playing pirated games or with a hacked console at all if you value your online services and purchases.

The days of Wii, 3DS and WiiU's easy freebie online access with little repercussions could well be behind us. This time round a choice may have to be made.

In the past we got homebrew and piracy with online untouched. This was one of the reasons Nintendo consoles got hacked to bits.

Nintendo's biggest way to fight hacks and piracy is to fully utilize and develop an online service akin to live and psn. It won't kill it completely but it will combat it.

Apology coming your way.

I don't believe a word Sony says regarding this matter though, the PSP was thriving even with rampant piracy (note the small p :) ).

I don't understand how Sony can blame piracy for the demise of a console that sole over 70million units worldwide.

I think they are looking for excuses to cover up that they lost in the console war. I think a proportion of the blame has to lie on Sony's chosen method of distribution. The UMD was quite possibly one of the worst media options in a long time.

Let me clear something up though, I believe piracy is wrong but I don't believe it's as big an issue as Developers, Record Labels, Movie Studios and others make out. The number of people pirating content is a SMALL fraction of those that actually indulge in it.

Man of my word though, you provided evidence so here it is, Sorry.

The console sold tons of units because it was hacked to hell and who doesn't want a free game box? I would be more interested to hear software sales figures, as that's the part people would be pirating, not the system itself.

That being said I agree with you. I think Sony is either covering something up, or just plain overreacting. If they had continued to export and localize games, I honestly believe they would have turned a profit, regardless of piracy. You'd be surprised how common piracy is these days, though. Its gotten so bad that a lot of companies actually track torrent downloads in order to advertise better, or to get feedback. Kinda nuts if you ask me, lol.

Either way, I wouldn't say piracy would KILL a system in most cases, but its still bad news. Third party developers are much less likely to develop games for a console that everyone and their sister is pirating games for. Although I have already admitted to piracy here, I will also say that, without a doubt, it only serves to hurt a console, especially early in its lifetime. Nothing good can come from it.

Also, you didn't capitalize "piracy," but you did capitalize "Developers, Record Labels, Movie Studios, and Sorry," lol. S'all good, just couldn't help but notice, haha.

Just did a quick google for Software Sales for the PSP.

http://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/Software/Global/

These probably aren't official figures but are more than likely representative.

Just for a quick comparison I have screengrabbed the top 20 hardware sales and the top 20 software sales for all consoles

Hardware Sales:
Hardware Sales Top20.JPG

Software Sales:
Software Sales Top20.JPG

Makes for interesting reading and again doesn't really support Sony's argument. Maybe this topic should be continued in another thread to keep all future posts on topic and give others an area to debate the effects of piracy.

Meh just continue this here. If you're going to mention piracy in a thread title, everyone will lose their shit. So it's better to rant here about it since it's derailed to hell anyways.

**Ever, not most cases. Also if piracy is a deterrent to developing, then how in the holy hell do you explain the entirety of PC games?

Yup. Already had this convo, not doing it again. Read my earlier posts and the links I provided. Sorry, but there has been at least 1 case. If you don't agree, then good for you.
