Hacking Hi, Need help with 3ds update

So, I've been off for awhile and now there's a new update 11.5.
I have custom firmware in my O3ds and I luma 6.6 still.

Apparently there's a new B9S, which I have no idea what it is, and that luma can only be updated on it.

My questions are: I'm on 11.4. Can I update to 11.5 freely? Or do I have to update my luma first? If so, how can I update it??

ok. thank you very much. Another thing, I don't know if you can help me... I wanted to follow these steps so that my 3Ds works without an SD card:


Section IV - CTRNAND Luma3DS

1. Reboot holding (Start) during boot to launch the Luma3DS chainloader menu
2. Launch GodMode9 by pressing (A)
3. Navigate to [0:] SDCARD
4. Press (Y) on arm9loaderhax.bin to copy it
5. Press (B) to return to the main menu
6. Navigate to [1:] SYSNAND CTRNAND
7. Press (Y) to paste arm9loaderhax.bin
8. Select “Copy path(s)”
   • Overwrite any existing arm9loaderhax.bin if prompted
9. Press (A) to unlock SysNAND (lvl1) writing, then input the key combo given
10. Press (B) to return to the main menu
11. Hold (R) and press (B) at the same time to eject your SD card
12. Remove your SD card from your device
13. Press (Start) to reboot your device with your SD card removed
    • Booting your device at least once with your SD card removed will allow you to configure the CTRNAND based Luma3DS installation
14. Use the (A) button and the D-Pad to turn on the following:
    • “Show NAND or user string in System Settings”
15. Reinsert your SD card into your device
16. Press (Start) to save and reboot

Can I still do it even though a9lh is outdated from luma? Is it safe and can I do this before changing to B9S and 11.5??

Do that AFTER you upgrade to B9S, it replaces A9LH. Everything you used for A9LH will become useless once you update to Boot9Strap. What used to be arm9loaderhax.bin is now boot.firm, which is what you'll copy to your CTRNAND if you just follow the guide to the end.

Since everything became useless, Will the systems backups( I think I have one for 11.2 and one for 11.3) will also be useless?? And the game saves backups too??

NAND backups are still useful as long as you use the safe option when restoring so that it doesn't overwrite B9S. Nothing you have on your system will be touched.

No, your NAND dumps are still good as are your game saves. I only meant A9LH payloads like Luma, Decrypt9, Godmode9, etc etc. Those have all been updated to "boot.firm" to work with B9S.

I highly doubt that would happen, but if so you'd just update and replace it with the new *hax* like you're doing now.

And to be honest, in my personal opinion as sated on another thread here I think it's unnecessary. When will you ever be using your console without an SD card? Then if your SD card starts to fail, how will you know if your console is loading from CTRNAND but still showing your stuff and it's not working right? You'd automatically think something is wrong with your device when it is probably just the SD card. And plenty more reasons, like everytime you update Luma, you have to update CTRNAND too, if you forget it might cause weird issues, etc.

The only time I think it should be used is to conceal CFW, on a resale if you can't/don't want to remove it or as an additional step to check a failing SD card/against corrupted files.

Then I think I won't do it. But What if the SD card gets corrupted, Will my 3ds be down forever? Or if I have a back up can I transfer the files to a new SD card and still be able to turn the ds on?

Also, is CFW removable? Is it possible to return the 3ds exactly like it once was?

Yeah, if your SD card dies you can just copy your backup files to a new one and it will work. Even if you can't get your old files, all that's required to boot the console is the "boot.firm" on the root of the SD card and you can always download a fresh one.

Also if your SD card dies and your *hax* is copied to CTRNAND, the most you can do is play cartridges anyway since everything digital is installed to the SD card, not the internal memory (save for DSiWare IIRC). So basically unless all your games are physical and you just HAVE to play them if your SD card dies (before you can get a new one), there really is no point to copying to CTRNAND. The 3DS comes with a 4GB SD card (which is nothing) so you might as well just use that as a backup in case of your current one dying vs CTRNAND. You can't do much with either but boot the console.

No need to substitute anything, the A9LH to B9S guide includes instructions for copying Luma to ctrnand.

Yeah I know I helped test it . That doesn't negate that's it's pointless for the average user IMO, or guarantee everyone uses it. I'm not a fan of using Luma Updater anyhow since so many noobs use it constantly and then freak out when an hourly has bugs..... Unless the new commits add something brand new or offer a complete overhaul to pre-existing bugs, I'll always suggest to download the stable build from the repo.

Exactly the reason why I disabled the hourly option in the latest version.

Oh awesome, granted it was useful for seasoned users but we can/should just compile it ourselves if we want to test nightlies (or know where to get them pre-compiled). I shall start suggesting it again vs the repo because it's a great program.

I kind of feel the same way about Decrypt9 vs. GodMode9. I know @d0k3 is really trying to phase out D9 in favor of GM9 but I'd like to see both continued since D9 is extremely noob friendly in comparison. Sometimes people go overboard in GM9 because of all the menus they get curious and mess things up Lol.

I feel the same about D9 and GM9. I only use GM9 when I have to. I've been using D9 for so long because it's easier to use and more noob friendly, imo.
