I have not turned on my Wii U since the 5.5.2 update and I have the DNS setup to block updates. Should I install Haxchi or redNAND? Based on info in other threads it sounds like redNAND is the way to go now because of 5.5.2. Also I have a 128GB SD card but should I buy a 64GB SD card for redNAND? Would I be able to use the additional space on the 128GB SD card?
Where did you hear that about redNAND? Out of what I heard, redNAND is pretty buggy... I'd go with Haxchi.
I don't know where you read you should install redNAND. That's an old outdated and prone to corruption method. HaxChi is what you want.
Just so you know... it wasn't redNAND that saved 5.5.2 users. It was HaxChi. If you used redNAND without HaxChi you're in the same boat as fresh 5.5.2 users. No entry point. If you used redNAND with HaxChi then like I said, it's HaxChi that saved your ass. You have no benefit over regular HaxChi CFW users if you have redNAND during this update.
if u install redNAND, then yes, u can use the additional space. I have redNAND installed on my sd card, but I no longer use it. I'm using a 256GB card which has served me well. I even have a backup of it on two or three external hdds.
Well I guess I am ignorant then. I apparently did not do enough reading about them. Okay, so Haxchi is what I should go with over Mocha & redNAND. I did not realize you could use redNANd with Haxchi. With Haxchi do I need to backup my NAND? Also what is the minimum size SD card that I should use with Haxchi? I guess the size of the memory card depends on if I need to backup the NAND.

For most users, RedNAND is barely any kind of benefit at all. Just look past it and settle with Haxchi on sysNAND.
The question in the title is fallacious, you can use Haxchi to run rednand through Mocha just fine (although it mainly brings disadvantages compared to sticking with Haxchi's sysnand minicfw)
I see, so if I were to install Haxchi would you recommend backing up the NAND by means of redNAND or some other means? I guess I am just used to the original Wii where you could back up the NAND and restore it if needed.
A nand backup is of course recommended; but with a proper dumper instead of creating a rednand just to back that up (when the first CFWs based on precompiled fw.img were invented, we didn't know any better; but the rednand format drops the ECC data from the slc/slccmp partitions, meaning those backups are useless for flashing to sysnand)
(It's actually possible to recreate the ECC areas, but since we now can simply do proper dumps...)
(There's no software nand/eeprom restorer either, the earliest possibility for homebrew code execution is with CBHC, which is still extremely late in the boot chain compared to BootMii on boot2)
In addition to the raw nand+eeprom+otp backups, it's a good idea to also do a file-level backup (using FT2SD or ftpiiu-everywhere), since those can actually be restored as long as you can get back into ftpiiu-everywhere (which means, for one, almost every Vwii brick)
I'm in that boat with rednand without haxchi... But i installed gx2 installer on USB key with hombrew loader so i still have both icons on sysnand. Can i use this to install haxchi on 5.5.2 or even hombrew loader use browser hack ?
It doesn't matter if you have WUP Installer GX2 or HBL channel installed, they won't launch on an unpatched sysnand. You'll have to use HaxChi to do anything.
It's very simple, if you don't have HaxChi and you're on 5.5.2, there's nothing we can do for you right now

The main advantage is indeed not going through the browser for homebrew (so: works offline, works on 5.5.2 if already installed, works every time)
It also has a rather convenient minicfw: fast and simple
You can map individual homebrews and/or that minicfw to buttons to be held on the gamepad while you launch Haxchi
If you use "quick boot" (select app to launch on gamepad before operating system is ready), you can launch Haxchi from there since after all it's just an emulated DS game, as far as the console knows
