Wow, its been a while since I posted here.

Anyway, yeah.
I'm wondering if there is a program out there or in development that allows me to install .cia files via the computer.
Allow me to elaborate.
The current way I know how to install a .cia isas follows:
Drag and drop the .cia to the SD card on the computer.
Insert into 3DS and launch into RX-EmuNand.
Use BigBlue or similar to install .cia.

The problem is that its a major waste of space.
You need to have twice the available space on the SD card to install anything.
If what you're trying to install is 2GB in size, you'd need 5GB free on your SD card!
Sure, you can remove the .cia afterwards. But what if you technically have enough space to support a 2GB app (i.e. 3GB space left on the SD)?
Well, shucks to you, because that space will be taken up by the .cia.

But what if you could install a .cia via the PC?
I know that it has to be in some way possible, because I backed my entire SD card up onto my PC when switching SD cards. I had a number of apps in it that were installed with .cia's via BigBlue, and they showed up fine on my 3DS once I transferred them to my new SD card, so logic tells me it would be possible to install/decompress a .cia file the same way BigBlue does, but on a PC.

Did a dig and looks pretty cool, but it also looks like it will be time consuming to set up.
There's really not a way to just do it directly onto the SD on the PC?

what do you mean? you just install the FBI cia file, then you do install over network. you then use "socketpunch" on your PC to send the file to your 3DS. what's time consuming about it?

He wants to install cias on the SD card without a 3DS. Which can't be done.

he wants to be able to install CIAs without them taking up twice the size on the card is what i got from his first post. which FBI network install can do. .
his "put files on the sd card" thing was just an idea of how to do it in my opinion. and that cannot be done as you say. his best bet is to use fbi.

Are there any specific reasons for this?
Why would the software still work when transferred to another SD card?
What is stopping a program from putting a game in an "installed" state onto the SD card?

I imagine it has to do with keys or something other. just a guess though.

Still missing a key to encrypt it.

Installed CIAs are encrypted. The 3DS has the encryption keys. We don't have the keys.

When you move the files to a new SD card, you just move the encrypted files.

I suspected that the EmuNand would bypass the problem with keys...
it also does some things inside NAND like installing the ticket the CIA has, as well as certificates etc.

"in theory" I think you would need to dump the NAND as well to install a CIA so you can manually install it. also you'd have to decrypt the CIA, or at least decrypt the encrypted titlekey, if necessary.

it's not worth it. just use network install (Socketpunch?), or copy the CIA to the SD card and install.

Right... hmm.
I thought that things didn't get encrypted on the EmuNand the same way as on the standard firmware...
That would also mean I still wouldn't be able to transfer my installed apps to another 3DS, I presume.
Too bad this guy had to die.
Could've used his help with this...

Slightly unrelated but also related, you can use CIAngel or freeshop in order to not need the twice the size requirement

Hmm... I'm wondering how long it takes before Nintendo finds out people can download directly from their servers ^^;
It's taking too long apparently.. they seem to care more about patching out entry points over denying public access to the download servers

EDIT, this has been a thing for a few months, started with funkyCIA i think, or was it something else...

That's kinda strange...

Anyway, I'll give both FBI and CIAngel a thurough try out.
Thanks for the fast replies, guys.

Requesting an admin to close the topic (unless somebody else has something to add).
My questions have been answered ^^

They can fix it, and likely already know. Unfortunately for them, it requires a system update on both the CDN and the 3DS to fix it, which they can't do because it would be a complete overhaul from how the CDN and the 3DS works.

Hello.

With arm9lh or b9s this situation could have changed, we already have access to the whole console.

What do you think?
I am interested in installing games directly in the SD without going through the console.

You can't do that. You need the console.
