I have a 1TB USB HDD that I was going to use for my Wii U. I also have a y-cord/cable that has usb plugs for power and data for the USB HDD... Does it matter which plug goes where on the back of system usb ports? Thoughts appreciated :)

yes, it does matter. looking at the back of the Wii U, the ports are positioned one above the other. the long (data) cord goes in the top port, with the short (power) cable going in the lower one

Strange. My ports are side by side. Is what you're talking about relevant to older models, because I bought the Mario Maker bundle. Unless I'm just missing a third port because I connected my external drive without looking (I have my console in a cabinet). All I know is that I have no problems from how I currently have it plugged up.

I think he's referring to the orientation of the wii u. it sounds like his wii u is horizontally stationed whereas urs is vertically. the wii u has four usb ports: two in front; two in back. I never knew there was a right way to insert the y cable though. however, it's obvious which is data and which is power just based on the way the cord looks.

Well it works for me without any issues, even the front port works, so maybe it applies to vwii backup loading? I know that requires specific port to be used.

u r correct. either series of ports can be used with the wii-u hdd. normally, the back right or top port is used for the virtual wii, but some backup loaders, such as usb loader gx, can be changed to accommodate others. I've not tested that though.

I mean I used wiiflow, and I always had to use a specific usb port in the back to make it functional, on wii flow is labeled USB1. Even though the wii u has 4 as opposed to 2 on wii, it still applies. Only in wii u mode does that not matter at all, any usb port works. Something to do with the way ios works when usb loading was made possible in the 4.3 update for some accessories

that's y I changed from back ports to front ports with the wii u hdd, but I think u can manipulate the usb port being used, at least the back ones, in the settings. it could be that the virtual wii only reads the two back ports (never tried the front ones) like a normal wii or that it's restricted to one port only which is the one I mentioned. the way the wii u works is that it doesn't assign anything by default, so ur wii u hdd might be usb 1 or usb 2 but be in the same port. I think it's which usb device is recognized first. that's where u encounter issues with say ftpii everywhere since it only sees usb1. u can use wupclient to recognize usb2, if that's what the drive is assigned to. that's how I learned this actually. this is a good time to have toggle switches available if possible or just simply unplug the drive and reset to make it read as usb1.

If you are going to use the hard disk to store Wii U games installed via the Brazilian method it does not matter which ports you use.
