New Atari 2600/Sega Genesis Consoles & Handhelds Announced

Capture.JPG

The Nintendo NES Mini has come and gone but what's in for those who wanted re-releases of their favorite retro SEGA and Atari consoles?

AtGames might have listened to you since the company has announced its Fall 2017 lineup of classic gaming hardware, including new premium HD versions of their classic gaming consoles: the Atari Flashback 8 Gold and the Sega Genesis Flashback. Each console includes a selection of built-in Atari 2600 and Sega Genesis 16-bit games, respectively, as well as 21st century-esque features, including wireless controllers.

These consoles along with additional products, including the Atari Flashback Portable Game Player and the Sega Ultimate Portable Game Player will be available at all major retailers in Fall 2017. However, no word about the pricing yet.

These are cool and all but whenever it's something unofficial, I feel like I'm cheaping out. I'd much prefer a branded megadrive and controllers.

A Target near where I live already was selling these things. They have games pre-installed and can play the cartridges too (not sure on the Atari one though)! Pretty cool, although I can play most of the library of both systems on either my modded PSP or N3DS.

To anybody that still decides to buy this, I hope for your sake that the aforementioned 'sound issues' they were having with their stuff back in March aren't still in the 'final product'. But oh well, who am I kidding. Pile 'em high cheap Rockchip ARM Linux SoCs and some cheap cash grabs is all these things are. They don't even have the decency of treating any of the opensource code they crib from well or in a fair way. They like to drink from the deep well of opensource code, but not contribute back what is demanded from them under those very same licenses, and they think they can just shop around for 'cheap hire' on their crappy inhouse emulators too. Heaven knows if they did decide to still use RetroArch on their Rockchip system or not, although that 'rewind feature' sure looks suspicious. I guess when you have your company base its operations in Vietnam, Singapore or any of these countries, abusing open source licensed code is seen as no big deal with limited fallout.

It gets really appalling to see companies continue to abuse and mistreat us like this while simultaneously making money off our work, and it might well have to come down to dual-licensing RetroArch so we can at least fall back on contract law violations the next time something like this happens again, because we've had just about enough of the 'hubris' of companies like this, the Hyperkins, etc. We are tired of the bullshit games these guys keep playing where they pretend to the public on one hand they are creating 'awesome tech', then in reality it's just a cheap $10 Rockchip ARM Linux board with some frontloaded emulators that everybody and their dog has already used donkey's ages ago. It's disgusting, it's fraudulent, it's parasitic, and it sucks. We have put years of our work into our own software, and for what? To make some shady entrepreneurial 'retro-themed' companies some easy money? Sure looks like it.

We have been shopped around like this twice now this year. In each and every single one of these cases, these guys contact us, not the other way around. We never solicit anybody. They use up our time with 'Skype calls' and all sorts of crap which I am just not going to bother with anymore to be honest with you. Once we were contacted by Gogame (a Sega subsidiary), after that this one (Atgames). I think the two are allied too, the previous guy kept sending e-mails to us about how he was ordering some of these Atgames products and how he'd like to use RetroArch on it, etc. That 'funny guy' also thought that I would willingly give up my rights to RetroArch by relicensing it as MIT, so that his companies could essentially create a closed source fork, not give any changes back and just pretend like they wrote it all. It's a really, really disgusting industry out there. Good thing I'm not stupid like that. Also worth noting - for months that went into a single demo for one of these companies, we never received so much as a single cent.

The only responsibility I have at this point are to our users, the ones funding us on Patreon. Those will receive all our undeserved time and attention, these companies can go take a hike unless they start making it worth their while. And if they decide to still use RA anyway while no permission is granted and the license stipulations aren't followed, we could always fall back on this -

Corporate welfare is about to stop guys, at least as far as our project is concerned. We are well and duly fed up of the abuse.

I don't use RetroArch myself, but you guys sue these people and get the money you worked hard to make them... You have to make it unprofitable for abuse like this to stop. When they realize there is no profit in stealing maybe they will move onto something less shady... I doubt it with all my heart, most of the time these companies will just shutter and reopen next week under new ownership who happens to the uncle or cousin of the old owner... At this point all you can hope is the the rest of the family is just as scum as the original owners and short change them as well... Human nature is hilarious.

That's the problem with these guys, they send you e-mails like this on Day ONe :

'We have tested your emulator on our new target hardware to be release in Q4 2017 and would like to know if you are open to discussing licensing.'

' As mentioned in previous email thread, we are interesting in porting your build to our RK3036 based Android system. We are currently having an Genesis emulator developed in-house But we encounter some performance issues related to audio and frame rate which does not appear in your RetroArch build. '

Then they cut off all communications with you, then a few months later and look here, this very suspicous looking thing with real-time rewind, a bunch of other features that looks suspiciously like RetroArch. What am I to make of that when you have already established upfront you'd like to use it, and I stated my conditions for doing so, and you essentially gave me some bullshit like 'nah we don't need your license, we just need you to fix some audio issues for us'. I am not one of your wage slaves, I am not going to work on crappy codebases for free. The temerity and audacity of these companies to begin with. Why do you tell me in your introductory e-mail you want to discuss licensing then a few e-mails later 'nah we don't want that, just fix our audio issues in our crappy inhouse emulator'? The whole thing seems like deliberate 'shopping around', see what free service we can render out of these guys. Except I am not prepared to go do that.

All these guys BTW have never so much as offered a single cent. While we did not lift a finger for Atgames and we kindly informed them that it's either 'take this license or we are done here', we did do a lot of work for some mobile subsidiary. Months of work went into a demo, none of it paid. I will think twice or thrice at this point before I ever answer some 'Skype chat' request again from some subsidiary pretending to be involved with some 'big-name game publisher' company, well and truly fed up with getting this kind of reception.

BTW, this is not the last company that has solicited us like this. Already there is some 'Valley' startup now sending us a bunch of unsolicited e-mails as well where they just want to basically 'leverage' libretro/RetroArch again. In each and every single one of these instances, you have to rely on random CEO's 'goodwill' in order to get anything to come out of it. Hah. Yeah right. I could wait until the cows come home before my trust in their 'relative goodwill' gets us so much as a single cent. I have forwarded this to Hunterk and he can make the ultimate call as to whether or not we want to listen to anymore of what they have to say.

How come that users can band together and give us the necessary funds each month to be able to keep continuing with this project, like on Patreon, yet rich companies like this are so cheapskatish that they essentially want your work for $0? Why all this parasitism surrounding open source code? Why all the hypocrisy in this 'games industry' surrounding guilt tripping gamers for wanting to play an emulator when you HAPPILY want to use that very same emulator code, often without permission being granted or any kind of compensation, for your own commercial offerings?

You think some company would say "We would like to make a RetroArch Official console and split the profits with you guys 50/50." To me that sounds like a deal made in heaven, you guys make money for your work and the company gets a product that they essentially just have to box up and market. Although if I was going that route I would probably look into like a S912 chip based system and pack in a a nice controller from like 8bitdo. Would be nice if they could get a shell that looks like an older system too.. Not just a generic Android TV box...

In a perfect world a product like that would exist, all easy to use and cool looking not massively expensive but not so cheap it's junk.

If I ever win the lotto, I might start a company like that :) Sounds like it would be fun and massive headache all at the same time.

They don't want to split the money 50/50, they want it 100% for themselves. Asking for some sincerity in business dealings from a bunch of companies located in tax havens is probably asking for too much since they are already not willing to pay their fair share back to the local economy they operate in.

Too greedy... The sad part is, I think my idea would make more profits for the company in volume. The good will and support of the community would be invaluable. Making your customers and partners happy is key to long term profits and good karma. Unfortunately it seems the scum of humanity do not understand basic business acumen.

Yeah, this is the stupid part. Their greed almost guarantees them bad PR. We all know how Twitter/Facebook works, outrage, manufactured or real, is all the rage constantly. So why risk it? Why have your PR team working overtime because you wanted to cheapskate on a few dollars and fuck somebody over? Anybody who is truly well versed in business would not make that decision, they'd consider long-term to be more important. Unfortunately, short-term shallow thinking seems to be all the rage now, shoot first, ask questions later, even if it ends up damaging the company's credibility, gotta keep cheapskating on some $.

Not only in Brazil but in Azores and Portugal too. :)
Mega Drive is the original name of the console, SEGA only changed it in the Americas to make it edgy, cool or something. It reminds me of how Nintendo did the opposite with the SNES -- they gave it a kiddy, Lego-y, purple-y, boxy-look instead of sticking to the original design which is much MUCH better.

Anyway, for those who want a cheap Mega Drive / Genesis just get an Android TV box and install what you want on it. Cheaper and better than AssGames.

That would be nice but this is AtGames.

AtGames will probably be like: "Let's just rebrand this for the millionth time and the whales will buy this, you'll see!"

Well i own an Intellivision flash back from them. The emulation is pretty bad with bad sound and only composite output for video. The GUI is bad also.
On the other hand the Unit looks good, the controllers are pretty much the best out of this pack with the overlays.
What you can basicly do is, put an raspberry pi or Zero in get an usb adapter ( or build one yourself ) and then make some awesome Intellivision Emu console with HDMI output.
The deal might be also interesting because you can use the rom files of the games then legally.

I already know that. And I am agreeing with you. :)
