Nintendo knew about derek's SigHax since 33c3. They also knew he wasn't going to release it. Hedgeberg's attempt is pretty well documented with her streams along with all the struggles. They probably didn't expect this to drop so soon. I don't think most of us did.

I think Nintendo didn't do a hardware revision to fix this when they designed the N2DS XL. Come on this is Nintendo we're talking about. They probably figured it'll take all year or maybe more the way things were going and they could end of life the 3DS line when it got released or just hasten it. They might have had enough lead time to put 11.4 on N2DS XL, but if they are using it for media and such now, it may already be in production and being warehoused to have enough units for launch. It could be on 11.3 or even 11.2 when it hits the store shelves.

Will they try to redouble their efforts at thwarting homebrew as they have done recently? They have lost the CFW battle. Will they pull all the DSiWareHax games? Will they redouble their efforts on promoting the Switch? Will they redouble their efforts on creating a true successor to the 3DS with or without backwards compatibility the way 3DS had with DS? When will we see 11.5 or 12.0? What do you think?

(Mods feel free to move this if you think it better belongs in another section.)

I'm willing to bet there's going to be another HUGE delay between 11.4 and 11.5/12.0, just like between 11.2 and 11.3 did. And it's too late in the game to go back and recall/fix all those New 2DS XL units coming down the line in July, so those will be hacked too. I fully expect them to come with 11.4, there's enough time.

I guess it depends on if Nintendo discovered the sighax flaw soon enough before production began on the New 2DS, since manufacturing takes a long time, not to mention the time it would've taken to update the bootrom code and test to make sure it worked without errors. It's been nearly 6 months, but that flies in the blink of an eye. I'm going to take a guess that the N2DS won't have an updated bootrom, but only time will tell.

Nintendo can be really hit n miss on how they react to these sort of things. Like obviously they should have known that a NATIVE_FIRM requirement to the homemenu would cripple CFWs, but they took SO LONG to actually do it. Which actually makes me wonder if they add new security to the 2DS XL. Like I said before, Nintendo isn't really known for doing something new. They tend to recycle the same parts and only adding slightly new parts to not cause conflict, like most likely adding a different chip for the screen to not have the system soft-lock trying to setup 3D on it.
At the same time, Nintendo also had more than enough details to knowing how to prevent sighax on the 2DS XL, but it raises the question if they actually used that information. Nintendo is rather unpredictable at times.

Do you think someone will make a NTRBootHax cart and sell them like Gateway? Or our community of hackers release a version that will work on something like Acekard?

This is purely speculation on my part, but in the past Normmatt worked on NTRCardHax for Acekard 2i, so I wouldn't be surprised if he worked on this as well. If a cheap DS flashcart could serve as a secondary way to both hack a 3DS and act as a hardmod, it'd be a great boon.

This would be almost noob proof.

I don't think 6-7 months is enough to do a hardware revision, code for it, test it, and validate. I think it's going to be rehash of old hardware.

This would be almost noob proof.

All you'd need would be some mashup of godmode9/decrypt9/safeb9sinstaller to provide both hacking functionality and nand dump/restore functions and voila. It'd basically be:
  1. Insert card, boot console, backup NAND
  2. Install sighax
  3. ???
  4. Profit
Then if things go wrong or sighax gets removed in some update:
  1. Insert card, boot console
  2. Reinstall sighax or restore NAND backup

Doesn't get much easier than that, heh.

Uhhh, nothing? An intern will present them with Switch profit money and they'll smell it and be calm. I don't think anything serious will happen, the DSIWare thing, I can buy, but I think they'll just push through their products with the thought of profit in mind. That New 2DS XL is going to sell well, Switch selling well, BOTW sold well, MK8 Deluxe sold surprisingly well, if they were in dire straits, like say this was 2015 Nintendo, they'd probably be pissing themselves and do something drastic. Nintendo now? I don't think so.

I saw Gateway was making for flashcard from their factory, I am pretty sure it's because of this.

About the topic anyway it's maybe worst than A9LH, but a bit easier to install.
Don't think they care THAT much.

Older/Actual Gateway NTR flashcard would be able to do it too, they just need to update the kernal to make it work. (if it work like that :P)
Since they can control the kernel, they probably can. They could have paid off some low wage Nintendo technician for one of their carts or a third party contractor that has access. I know last few times I sent my 3DS for repair, it wasn't to Nintendo, but some repair shop.

(And even if it would work with the Acekard, that card will be out of stock very fast)

I still have mine. :) Made me happy to hear them mention it.

Had a thought. Not sure how familiar people are with manufacturing process. The lead time involved can be very long even with JIT, or especially because of it. They would have to get the tooling, the molds, source parts, etc. They might have to have their current contracts tweaked for expanded production/new line. Of course things would happen concurrently, but only so much. Also you'd have to make prototypes. Things like CAD and 3D printing can shorten a lot of this, but it's still quite an undertaking.

I would hope the same can be said for R4I SDHC, I still have that.
I think you'll need to have the ability to modifiy the card for that, I saw an option to make something on the Acekard on Decrypt9 but I didn't saw the other flashcard, I don't know why, maybe because the Acekard have something special ?

After all Gateway was the first to make the mset exploit public with an NDS card, and since that NTRCardHax thing seem to be the utlimate opportunity to make a lot of money, I am sure they'll take it.

11.4 still needs a second hacked system, though, right?

So while possible, it's a huge pain in the ass. Maybe that's good enough to discourage a fair number of potential hacked 2DSXL systems.

How about the Gateway Blue Card? I'm not familiar with Acekard.
