I'm trying to upadate using the luma3ds updater, but I get an error saying "Update Failed"
"Download Failed Could not get A9LH payload"

You'll have to download Luma v7.0 from the GitHub page.

could you tell me how to install never installed it manually before

I copied over the files to my flashcard and it gave me an error on the .nds file.
It then corrupted certain files on my micro-sd card and gave timestamp errors.

Download the v7.0.5 7z file, and extract arm9loaderhax.bin to your SD root.

Move from a9lh to boot9strap https://3ds.guide/updating-to-boot9strap
easy and works just as fine as a9lh did+ it'll have support since a9lh doesn't

I updated to 7.0.5 and it is now working although the one rom I really wanted to play Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: Spirit Caller isn't compatible, but mario kart DS worked fine. anyway to make Yu-Gi-Oh! GX: Spirit Caller compatible?

After doing a bit of research there doesn't seem to be a reason to update to boot9strap other than installing the most recent version of luma3ds. If I were to update I wouldn't lose all my installed Cia's would I?

Well that might be the only reason but stability and updates are a think too, and doing something early might be better so u don't need to search again for the reply i sent u to update to boot9strap in the future, it's just as good as a9lh for a standard user but u'll be able to recive updates and support from the community since a9lh is getting outdated now

In TWLoader's DSi Menu, move to a Mario Kart DS ROM, press SELECT, then select "Set as donor ROM".
