For 11.4 they fixed the Ocarina of Time slowdowns, but now DS mode and homebrew don't work. Makes me wanna go back to 11.2 :/. Everything worked fine there.

Yeah, 11.4 broke the so-called reboot patches, required for launching another kernel such as twlfirm, agbfirm, or recovery, or the standard kernel in a different memory mode
And it was promptly fixed 14 hours after the launch of 11.4 :)

So just by updating luma i should be fine?

I've been telling people stay on 11.2 since 11.3 came out. but people just love that .1 difference i guess.

I got 11.4 and I got cubicninja and a new 3ds xl. while I can get into homebrew launcher, none of the homebrew work... they just freeze the moment I start them.

You have updated payloads right? So that isn't the issue? else I suggest to overwrite all your old homebrews on the sdcard.

i used to go out to the recycling center every couple weeks and look at the crts and other electronics people would drop off. Usually screens were broken or severely scratched from being tossed around. Did find a good one here and there, but never anything like a 1080i widescreen crt.

Is it piracy if it was released for free? Not in my opinion, but I also think it's not piracy if buying it isn't owning it, and it's not piracy if you can't buy it from the original creators anymore.
