Maybe when we get root access. At the moment we haven't even completely dumped the current OS, so figuring out how to flash a new one could take some time. Though I'd be curious to see if you could sideload android from the SD card rather than overwrite the switch's entire OS.

The original iPhone had an unlocked bootloader so they could port Android to it because of that.
If they have to go the same path as with the 3DS where sighax still isn't achieved for the public to use and it is around that long, we will have to wait a really long time for this to happen.

It isn't just to "port" things like this. We don't know how the bootcode etc. works. Is the bootrom even able to run the Android code etc.? It runs a custom code, so most likely it's need to implement a custom kernel to be able to choose what OS to boot or replace it completely.

So can we please stop with the Shield TV threads? If you really want another Android device, just buy one of these Android Sticks from Ebay that actually works quite well and it's cheaper than to destroy your Nintendo Switch.

Why on Earth would you buy a Nintendo Switch to run AndroidTV on it when you could get something significantly cheaper to do so?

This. I'm not even sure why this is desired. It would take some hacky BS to properly and fully take advantage of the controllers and the like.

Because if you buy a Switch for gaming, you could hack it and then have a normal tablet and an actual gaming platform both in one. Why not? Why carry more devices? I'd gladly ditch my Nexus 7 if I could run Android on my Switch.

To be completely honest, once the homebrew scene has complete access to all of the Switch hardware, I could see games being quote on quote "ported" to say something like the latest Nvidia Shield TV.

I say that as it was confirmed that the Switch uses an underclocked Tegra X1 which is considered to be a near stock version of the chip. So you could theoretically under/overclock another device with the Tegra X1 to match the Switch's clock speeds. Then all you'd need to do is how to convert the file format for Switch games and try to maybe adapt them to that devices controller input.

While that might seem like something that is "way out there" and would take a long time to accomplish (which I think it would honestly :P), it has been done before in some regard when talking retro consoles.

There exists fan "ports" of Game Gear games that are adapted for the Master System's architecture as they have a very similar chipset. So it has been somewhat done before in that perspective.

Not to mention, were dealing with an architecture that's in a wide arrange of mobile devices and microconsoles. The technology is somewhat familiar in that regard.

While I think its something that could be possible, I could be very well wrong and their might be difficult hurdles to overcome if this turns out to be at least feasible in the future.

We'll honestly have to see.

As for OPs thoughts on potentially getting another OS on the Switch, that could be possible to. And probably more possible than what I suggested honestly lol.

THIS.
I've said it a million times now and will say it again:
THERE IS MORE TO A SYSTEM THAN JUST THE SOC!

Just because they have the same SoC does not mean they are completely alike, and does not mean OS supported on one device will work on the other.

I mean it's a little silly sure. But it's far from "so stupid". There have been a few cases of the above madness happening in the real world. For example, everyone's favorite around here, when Triforce arcade games were able to boot up through Nintendont, being based on Gamecube hardware. Was that "so stupid"? No. Even further, when the original Xbox (with some slight modification) could boot SEGA Chihiro titles. Was that "so stupid"? Nope!

Just relax. Dare to dream a little bigger.

I remember when Wii U wasn't hacked yet.
People were saying that we will get Android on it. [Guess what, we didn't get it]

So even if Switch is hacked, don't raise your hopes up for Android.

If the switch got hacked and a port of Kodi was possible to run on it, I could see the Switch get VERY popular VERY fast with people.

I think, that problem with Wii U was, that no android ever run on that SoC .But now, we are starting with same SoC (although there are difference in the hardware) but it's much closer to android device (Sheild TV) than Wii U to any android device.

As far as i remember, the problem with Android for Wii U was that erm... There was only one PPC port. [Which would be pain in the ass to rewrite?] It included Android "Froyo" port. [2.1.1-2.3?]

oh my god

This is clearly hard for a lot of people in this forum but the Switch having the same SoC as a shield TV is not the same as Triforce and the gamecube sharing hardware. Triforce pretty much *was* a gamecube, whereas the Switch's OS, kernel, syscalls etc. are all completely different to that of an android device. It's not as simple as just recompiling to an apk, there's an entirely different system architecture to negotiate. And before you pull some 'BUT IT'S THE SAME ARCHITECTURE' - yes, the chip is. The system as a whole, encompassing hardware, firmware and software, is not.

This is like saying you could play DS games on android just by recompiling them, because Android phones are ARM and the DS had ARM cpus. Please stop talking about things you don't understand.

The original XBox was just an x86 PC, did you ever see anyone "port" all the games for the XBox to standard PC? No, because it's not that simple.

PS4/XBone are both just AMD-based x64 CPUs, do you expect those games to be "ported" to standard PCs? Because if so you're gonna be disappointed.
