I really want a Switch but right now, $360, including Zelda, is a bit much. I'll just get a 2ds but I need to know about the scene. Last time I came around a few months ago, the 3ds wasn't hackable at the current firmware.

All I want is snes, gba, and basically just emulation of everything the psp was able to emulate, and to play 3ds backups. That's a biggie too. If I buy a 3ds off the Ninty store, will the firmware it ships with allow me to install the latest hacks?

The o3ds and 2ds cant emulate snes at full speed.
The current version, 11.3, is un-cfw-able. But there are pretty much no consoles that come on this version, so yore good.
Go to http://3ds.guide that will help you setup cfw on the 3ds. Then you can install gba injected into the cia format (virtual console) and play old games either with homebrew emulators or vc.
The 11.3 has homebrew afaik but the 3ds will struggle with gba and snes on homebrew emulators; the cfw solution can run gba on the gba processor that nintendo included inside the 3ds so about 100% compatibility...
Also ds games can run with about any flashcart, and 3ds games can be installed from the freeshop.

The last firmware version is a big issue right now, you'd need to make sure you get one with 11.2 or lower, which is likely to be the version you get when buying a new console on any store if you do it now, then you are good to go.

The psp is cheaper. You'll even get native ps1 emulation. Why not get a psp?
Because the 3DS is better than the PSP, title wise. Obviously.

Who's charging that much for the Switch? That's highway robbery!
And if you want emulation, buy a PSP. PSP emulation is by far superior to the 3DS's emultion. Not to mention the almost 100% perfect PS1 emulation.
Only problem these days is finding one that isn't beat up and scratched.
Ebay, amazon, game stores. Most Game Stops still have PSPs in decent shape and or refurbished.

Please re-read OP, $360 is Switch + Zelda BoTW.
I really want a Switch but right now, $360, including Zelda
This is why English class is important.
As written it basically says the Switch right now is 360$, including Zelda as something separate. Where it should be worded with something like, "I really want a Switch with Zelda, but it would cost about $360 together."
Proper wording is everything.

If you just want emulators, you're good to go with soundhax. You have to launch them at the homebrew launcher, not the home menu. You can't get Custom Firmware on the latest system version.

Side note though that many (most but that may be wrong) work just fine, that is enless you have an issue with 30 fps or below 60 fps in general

snes works perfectly at perfect fps with blargsnes on both o3ds and n3ds with and without a9lh so idk why people are saying that snes emulation is so crappy on the o3ds...

Yeah, SNES emulation is actually pretty great on O3DS nowadays thanks to SNES 9X for O3DS, and its native GBA capability (albeit unlockable via CFW) is better than any emulation solution.

Cheap, great condition 2DSs on hackable firmware weren't particularly rare the last time I checked.

If you want PS1 games in your pocket you do need a PSP though.

1, gba vc is technically emulation but I get what ya mean
2. "good condition 2ds" XD the dpad is scratched up to 20170308_213916.jpg

..because of how obnoxiously hacky it is. It's like comparing ZSnes to BSnes...

I can help you there, I have a PSP 2000 in perfect condition that will most likely never be used again, so I'd be happy to get rid of it for a good price. No battery though, because the battery inflated itself when I tried to charge it after years of not being in use.
Note that that post isn't directed at you specifically, but anyone who wants a PSP :P
I have plenty of accessories for it including a MicroSD adapter, crystal case, pouch, and a composite TV-out cable. It has 5.00-M33 on it. Haven't been able to update it to a newer version because firmware updates require a charged battery, which I don't have. It works fine without the battery though. Works fine with newer games after patching them, or it could be easily updated to a newer CFW.

GBA VC is actually not emulation, it runs on native hardware that Nintendo for some reason added to the 3DS but never made use of beyond ambassador games (ARM7 CPU)

Tempting, even with the likely shipping costs. Still, they aren't region locked if I recall correctly...
