Depending how old they are, 16 bit is more colorful but 8 bit is a great platform to start.
Already done that, I have mentioned somewhere else that I bought two of the NES Minis, one for general use and one for games that were perhaps better for them. One of them is now just waiting for this update to hit.

My kids are playing the heck and enjoying 8-Bit Gaming. :) Mostly coop games like Contra, Jackal, Bubble Bobble, Rod Land, Blades of Steel.
There's some fantastic stuff available, it was because off them enjoying the 8 bit stuff that really made me want to make a SNES version for them....and me. :D

WHERE DID YOU GET THAT SNES CONTROLLER?!?!?!?

I'll try again...someone know a way to use an unofficial wii joypad with the classic mini? I hope someone can solve that...=(

I have a problem with mine as well, in the GUI of the NES Mini it works without any issue. However in RA I started to have issues when I tried to remap some buttons. My official Wii controller kept on working perfectly, maybe it will be resolved in the next version. I've heard the wireless 8bitdo controllers have the same issue. For now stay with Nintendo branded controllers.

I got that one from eBay.

I originally had for one for free from Club Nintendo as it was something that was available in Europe and Japan but sold it ages ago as I didn't think I'd ever need it again. The one from eBay cost me just over £40 but I was going to need to get a SNES controller at some point and I knew how good this was and the alternatives weren't that different in terms of cost and they're also not made by Nintendo, which this is.

I sold the original controller for a hell of a lot more than paid for this one so although the first one was free, it's sort of paid for the second one.

It's a wonderful controller and I can't recommend it enough to people if you can get them for a good price. It also has a slightly longer lead than the official NES version but I still use extension cables with both.

I do prefer the packaging on the Super Famicom Version though, not that it really matters.

Very nice. I am wondering with that SNES pad, did the mappings stick within RA? I think RA can only pick up on certain controllers, after trying to dive into RA's configuration files, I think it can only use official ones, if this is nintendo sanctioned it should work. I am just curious if that is the case. I bought 2 8Bitdo SFC30/SNES30, tested it with the NES30 Classic Edition adapter, but it only maps A and B to all of the buttons on those controllers. Hopefully in 2.12, there can be more modifications to the drivers that can be placed in RA for these controllers.

No idea about RetroArch but it is essentially an official Wii Classic Controller in a different shell so I assume it'll do the same as they do.

It has been confirmed already that those Club Nintendo controllers do work in RA. I am curious if official controllers work in RA in combination with a 3rd party extension cable. I guess we find out soon enough.

Yeah, you are right. I thought I say that explicitly since all 3rd party controllers don't seem to work. Maybe something to do with the Wii protocol or maybe something is wired differently in the plugs of those controllers and extension cables.

I really hope so...I buyed this two controller from amazon, but they don't work neither in GUI neither in RA. However when i connect it RA reconize it. Official controller cost a lot and they are necessary for SNES games...=(
