Completely new to homebrewing, i just downloaded homebrew on my old 3ds(11.2.0.35u) and im trying to open FBI to install CIA files but all i get is:

khax: Retrieving system information...
khax: Choosing exploit to execute...
khax: Unsupported firmware version.
Press any key to exit.

is there any way to change to supported firmware or am I just screwed?

Does this require me to load up my vanilla backup folders?
...I don't know what you mean by that, but you should definitely back up your SD card before attempting to install A9LH. (And use Decrypt9WIP and/or Hourglass9 to back up SysNAND when indicated in the guide.)

By the way, in case you're unaware, following the guide installs a complete custom firmware. It allows for homebrew on the home menu with fbi among many other things. It involves downgrading to 2.1 installing arm9loaderhax, and upgrading back. You dont have to back up any folders, but you must make a NAND backup, which the guide explains how to do. Also, a NAND backup is everything not on the sd card, say your 3ds firmware and dsiware games.
