This was already known. You use the dock to play on the TV.
Know yes, but it was never said if you could just get a usb to hdmi adapter or if the dock itself was going to be needed.

If nintendo is using none stander setup then we wont be seeing any 3rd party for a while. Meaning paying big Ns price tag for another dock, vs buying a cable for $20

I don't understand the surprise, it was already announced, and, well, if you have to, just move it with the dock? It's not like the thing is heavy or something... It's like complaining that your console isn't sold with two sets of cables, so you would have to unplug them if you want to play on another screen...

LOL, yea thats what i stated. If you look at it as an xbox (because they have big power bricks) or a wii u then it all makes sense, no need for another dock. Just move it.
But some people wanted to know if the dock was needed or if another cable could be used. Some wanted to know if you could go from switch to pc for recording. So just some information to confirm everything.

Nothing wrong even if it requires the official dock.
Still cheaper than buying 3 ps4 or 3 xb1 if you wanna setup 3 playing places in your home. I can see some people putting a Switch dock under every TV in the house.

Also 10 docks + 10 ethernet USB adapters + two 8-port ethernet hubs* can be used for bring-your-own-Switch LAN parties and competitive events.

Being able to buy additional docks is one of the best things about the Switch. Imagine if it was locked to just one console to force people to buy a whole Switch for each TV.

Also imagine if someone docked a Switch in a position that doesn't allow for proper ventilation for the more graphically intensive docked mode. Maybe that's also why third party cables/docks are discouraged.

*actually switches but that would have sounded confusing

did anyone actually think these were going to work?!
Wishful thinking, maybe. "Hey look, it's a USB Type-C port... maybe the dock is just a USB hub with a HDMI output!"

If anything, I think we can all be grateful that they chose USB C and didn't develop yet another proprietary connector that's slightly different from their previous connectors.

I think the dock just uses the USB-C "HDMI alternate mode" which essentially turns the port into a HDMI port + USB-C charging. Adapters are very cheap. There's also the "MHL alternate mode" which is the one used by smartphones, but it makes more sense to use the former

hdmi alt mode means using every usb-C pin to replicate perfectly HDMI 1.4b features (4K 30Hz, ARC, ethernet channel, etc.), with no pin left for USB and charging

mhl mode is limited I think

the most obvious would be the regular computer mode used by most hdmi+usb+charging laptop dongles, with some pins devoted to DP alt mode (then converted to "dumb HDMI" with no bells and whistles by the dongle) and other pins to USB and charging. If that was the case, those kind of dongles would work. After all, the Switch just requires 1080p 60Hz hdmi output, some USB love for ethernet adapters and wired controllers, and charging. It's no rocket science (4K HDR, etc.). Standard modes used by laptop dongles would suffice.

Yea alot of people did.
When i first saw it i thought it might work also, but after a few mins of thinking i knew it wouldnt. Some of the smart phones have problems working because they keep changing the protocol they use. So i knew it would be a nightmare trying to get one of them to work.

Garuntee there will be a cable out within a few weeks that lets you hold the system while it's displaying on the tv.

There wouldn't be much point to that, the screen on the Switch Tablet wouldn't work so at best you'd just save a couple of seconds from getting the Switch from its dock.

Besides I would rather be holding a freaking controller than the tablet.
Or the Joy-Cons in each hand. Nintendo made a bad call not including a tennis, golf and baseball game on 1-2 Switch to bring those nostalgic Wii tech-demos to the Switch.

They are just leaving room for Mario Tennis, Mario Golf and Mario All Stars Baseball.
