Hardware Why couldn't the switch dock load sideways?

I understand this is a first world problem but still it's sort of pissed me off. The switch loads from the top but the issue I have is my TV stand shelves have no clearance to hover the switch between the shelves and slide it down into the dock.

I can't have he dock on the top shelf with the TV as there is no space and it can't sit infront of the TV as it would block some of the screen.

Side loading (front to back) would of been a better idea.

You could probably dock it sideways/laying down.

There could be two reasons:

1. Cooling: hot air travels upwards on it own, and the system is probably designed to profit from naturalin addition to forced convection for its cooling. Probably setting it sideways would produce overheat.
2. Easy plug/unplug: probably to make it easy to disconnect and reconnect, the only thing that holds the switch down is gravity, well if they advertise it as plug/unplug whenever you want they had to make the process easy.

Maybe I'm not picturing correctly, but you could probably do it sideways without the joycons.

Where? You have to hover the thing over the dock then slide it down, you don't have clearance between the shelfs.

I suppose it fits at one side of the TV on that photo, there's enough space there, the thing is thin.
I don't really like that design idea of the switch, with the thing having to be up in there just to one side of the TV with the HDMI cable and power cable hanging around, it just wouldn't look good.

well you could add some rubber band to hold the switch and mount the dock to your ceiling if you preffer that ...

but I guess you are not wrong about that complain as there might be many people with problems like that, I for one would have the space BUT as I have two devilish cat monsters at home I can't put it into their reach which is everywhere that can't be locked which makes it actually really hard to find a place for the switch/dock with the current design ... maybe it is possible to put it onto the wall with some screws ....

maybe we can see cheap ass third party docks... i don't think the dock will have any voodoo magic, maybe we can even have a cable to connect it into the tv\charger...

He has clearance in the bottom left and right shelves. I've seen the Switch in person, it's smaller than you think.

Hope so, I don't own amiibos so can't compare, I just thought the wii u tablet what a pain in the ass to fit in its cradle under my tv.

I think I am going to have the same problem and suspect the solution will be to tilt the dock face down and then tilt it back up once docked. Not elegant but will work. Of course we will have complaint threads about wrist injuries.

Ah it wouldnt be smart to make a sideways dock.
The way they made it is good.
Im sure 3rd parts people will make a cable vs a dock. That way you can lay it on back and plug the cable in.
But as for Nintendo its a weight thing. The port is lose fitting for easy docking and undocking.

Also the thing is pretty small. Take some paper and a ruler andbdraw out the specs and your see how small it is.
But if you dont wanna do all that its just a tad bigger then a close 3ds Xl.
So not much space is needed.

You have the USB LAN adapter connected to the front USB port of the WiiU.. what?

If you plan on sticking the Switch nearby the WiiU it doesn't seem like an ideal place unless you're always going to use the Switch Pro Controller.

the y cable connected to a portable HDD (see it?) is taking the back ports. and anyway the lan adapter will be changing over to the switch no need to spend $50 on the switch version

why wouldn't it be? it will be docked most if it's life and you can turn the console on with the joypads. just clip them in when they need charging.

If you plan on having it docked then yeah, sure, but I wouldn't have it in such a place as you can play it anywhere around the house.
