Hardware Why couldn't the switch dock load sideways?

technically it's closer to a PS3, but with 1/50th the library, and none of the good games.

I wish there was a 2nd model of the Switch offered thats purely a console for those that have no intentions whatsoever to use it as a portable. Could offer more specs too since the cost is mostly because of the tablet.
Once the Switch brand has been established, you can bet your butt they will release lower-cost models. I would rank that a very high probability of becoming true. This is Nintendo (The Undisputed Kings of Saving Yen). They could save billions in such a move, while eroding the competition's sales by discounting aggressively while still making a nice profit on hardware: something that the competition will be hard-pressed to match. No need to miniaturise excessively, no need for LCD, far less warranty claims, easier servicing, etc. Big savings for them.

I can also see a portable-only model being a possibility (no dock). Perhaps made lighter and slimmer too. Their options are open - once the brand has been established they are free to do this without confusing the market.

Nintendo should hire you. :)

Docking sideways sounds awkward to me, it seems much more intuitive to just drop the screen into the device and then when you want to take it on the go, slide the joy-cons on the sides and lift it up. Sure you could still get that done while docked sideways, but it would be so much more awkward, and a little more time consuming in all honesty. I got a great spot with my setup for the Switch, so this is of no concern to me personally.

Hey.. the Vita is not a PS4.. And if other people in this thread can ask for fucking stupid things.. So can I.

But aren't you able to mirror your PS4 on the Vita, even if you're far away from it (just so long as they're both connected to wifi)? I don't have a Vita, so I don't know for sure, but I thought that was a feature of the Vita and PS4. Even if that works, I'd have to imagine there would be some lag.

A pure console version of the Switch would be about the size of a PS Vita TV, which is mildly concerning. It's not impossible (kind of like a "2DS"), but it's not exactly something Nintendo should in any way have associated as a competitor to the PS4 Neo and Xbox Scorpion.

Once the Switch brand has been established,...
Never gonna happen. Nintendo still relies on it's IPs to sell systems.
Mario is the best IP Nintendo has. Mario wasn't enough to push Wii U sales and is unlikely to push Switch sales especially considering the first Mario game will not be released until Decemberish.
By new years 2018 the switch will have only two games most people consider worthwhile that are not ports/reiterations of existing games.

Zelda/Pokemon are great IPs too, they are just more niche than Mario.

Nintendo should've had a Mario game ready for launch day. It would've ensured Switch's success far better than Zelda. If they had both, the Switch might have had record breaking sales.

Not the best launch was it. But we'll see what happens a year (or two) from now. I think Nintendo will continue to be a distant third for home consoles. There's no debate in my mind about that. The question to me is how much acceptance the Switch will get. It can't be worse than the Wii U unless the hardware is plagued with problems or something similar. I think a new major hardware revision is a certainty though. Lots of things change in 2+ years, especially with mobile tech. Nintendo will want to reduce costs further & improve appeal (and battery life) of the unit.

I did mean front to back, (unit on its side) but I didn't express this very well, slide in sideways or insert from the front to back like a NES cart would be better for me.

Yes, I understand, sliding it in sideways or inserting from front to back still sounds awkward to me, less intuitive and slightly more time consuming. I'm sure it could work, but I personally wouldn't want to do it that way.

like this?

Hate to ask, but could you put that in a spoiler?

Nothing saying they couldn't make a slightly larger console-only "Switch Pro" that runs games at a higher framerate/resolution. It would still likely end up at least $50 cheaper than the base unit, and they might even convince people who bought the portable version to get the console as well (saves would transfer because of cartridges and potentially an account system that lets cloud saves/games exist)

It's not like they haven't done something similar already, look at the N3DS

The Switch saves to internal memory / SD, not the cartridge iirc. And $50 is not that great of a savings for something that still is less powerful than the PS4 and doesn't have the games.

And my angle docking idea I think merits more discussion. Horizontal docking would be a pain, but an angle would have ventilation and fairly easy access.

If it's made larger and supporting higher resolutions there's nothing saying it won't be as powerful. It just would still have to have games developed with the portable unit in mind as well (lower resolution and framerates), but that's already the case

What makes you think it can scale like that? The performance levels have already been established and if Nintendo suddenly released a new version games wound take advantage of it.

Because that's already how it scales between handheld and docked
Because it was designed like that from the front, and the developers are already accounting for that. If they only had portable mode to work with they would never be able to optimize their games for docked mode. And now you want Nintendo to magically come out with a "Dock Plus" mode that the developers never got a chance to work with? That would fail horribly. If Nintendo ever comes out with a console only Switch it will max out at th power level of rhe regular switch when docked.
