To choose between one of these. Which is the one to go for? I quite fancy the spectacular artwork of Omega Ruby but I don't really know much about Pokémon games nowadays.

I'd love if Nintendo released a remaster of Pokémon Blue (my first Pokémon game) for the 3DS.

I'd go for Sun if you're into competitive play and want to get all the new event Pokemon, otherwise Omega Ruby is definitely my favorite. Pokemon Blue is also released on the eShop if you want to get that. It's fairly cheap.

I'd probably go for the newest one, Sun, unless you want all the mega stones, then go for Omega Ruby.
To be honest, I have no idea what the Mega Stones are about so since that's something I'd probably not be interested -- Omega Ruby is the one to go for.

Good to know. I collect 3DS games so a "Pokémon: Blue Remastered" for 3DS would be a must for me. Nostalgia is an easy cashcow. :P

If you're playing casually go with Omega Ruby, if you want to keep on the news about recent Pokemon stuff go with Pokemon Sun, you can also buy any of the Gen 1 games on the VC.

Mega stones are items used to mega evolve a Pokemon, a newly introduced concept since Pokemon X/Y, mega stones allows those pokes to get an upgraded form with improved stat boosts and skills, ORAS has all of them and SuMo has some of them restricted, so if you want the "full" newest experience, go with Omega Ruby, pick Sun/Moon if you're really curious about the new region but honestly, I'd stay with OR if I were to pick between those three

OR, and if you're desperate for competitive battles, maybe the Battle Spot there is still active with players, Ratings is closed though. Also, find a league that may still go for that metagame, it should be kept healthy because Gen 7 nerfed too many good things. Other than that, the challenge is roughly similar to the new games, just in general Gen 6 and 7 are easy to go through. OR is more open for exploration compared to Sun, and you have the option to turn down instant escorts, say May asking if you want to go straight to Petalburg City. Oodles of legendaries to catch, tutor moves, Pokemon Contests if you care, try to find serial codes for events, I even have some to spare, though I have a feeling only the Genesect one is still active.

Sun's only if you want to stay current, one buff they have with megas is that the stat changes happen upon mega evolving, rather than the turn after, so using Protect is no longer necessary upon mega evolving. Still, shittiest part of the new games is how not all the mega stones are obtainable. While they're busy trying to wrist-slap some people from Global Link based online services, they should be prepping event/GL distributions for the remaining mega stones. You know how fucked up it is that AI have all those mega stones (and unreleased hidden abilities for that matter) and you don't?

Or how they removed the national dex, or how they removed secret bases so leveling up to Level 100 in SuMo is one of the most hideous tasks to do, or how GL website doesn't work for a lot of people (login issues mostly), or how they haven't improved much the post game since Gen 6 (still better than X/Y postgame tho), or how they took a long time to both release Pokebank during Gen 6 and the corresponding updates

Oh, and how GF programmed a Pokemon to just use as an "Event Pokemon" future instead of just putting it in-game, like Marshadow, so yeah, Game Freak and the Pokemon company needs to get their shit straight

Yeah, I would've said more but I had to get pizza >.>. You're right on all that, though to make a note, the national dex is in Bank, but it should've been integrated into SM, I expected a 1.2 patch or even 1.1 when it was announced, would fix this, but nope. The leveling up is ridiculous, it's a case of necessitating cheating, for me in the form of an exp. multiplier. Soft-resetting though, to be fair is better year, faster reset time (if on N3DS), and only the Tapus and Cosmog require soft resetting actually, the rest are escape-able. EV training in SM is faster, but OR had great horde battle spots where it's fast too.

The national dex isn't something that should be the most "important" part of the game, people could just go to bulbapedia and check Pokemon facts about Pokemon "X" if they want, but is necessary because a dex recognizes the existence of a Pokemon within the game, and at the very least, is the only "info checker" for Pokemon who are about to be traded or send off to WT, so having it on an external app is a mistake, because its role most important is mostly needed on the main game, but again, for some people is important for others don't, but having a complete dex should be something common by today standards

EV training is kind of a give and go, Super Training imo did it so that you could see EV's much better, you could reset them without the need of an specific berry and you could upgrade them without items, SuMo has SOS battles so you can chain-battle until you get maxed EV's though, is kinda of a 50/50 no point in here, but I agree with the leveling up, is hideous and most people just do it because Bottle Caps only work if your Poke is at Level 100, which imo it shouldn't even be a requirement, Level 50 should have been fine since most battles with online regulations abide by the rule of 50, even battle tree does

It really depends what you want to get out of them. I would recommend X or Y, as I consider them to be the most 'rounded' and provide the best experience (in my view). Otherwise, I would recommend Sun/Moon, as, since they're the newest (I understand wanting to stay current), would be the best if you want to get into battling or other communicative aspects. I wouldn't recommend OR/AS to my worst enemy.

To be honest, I would actually just recommend Platinum or HG/SS over any of the Gen 6 or 7 games :^)

Interesting. The majority of opinions in this thread are more geared towards recommending OR overall than any other 3DS Pokémon title.

It depends on your choice, ORAS is far from being a bad game, at all, I think it improved several aspects of X/Y while getting a worthy remake, I guess some people (who did played the original R/S/E) never felt like this remake did justice for them, but that's more or less the mentality of some people who value more the Gen 1 games over its remakes (Leaf Green/Fire Red)

I agree with him that I'd recommend Gen 4 over pretty much all the generations, even the spinoffs games, but if we go by our focus which is modern Pokemon, the best pick is still ORAS simply because it has all the mega stones and modern stuff added, X/Y lacks some mega evolutions and such, and X/Y post game is lacking, very, very lacking. You just get like 2 legendary's to catch and that's it, you could rank yourself up with Battle Maison but again, nothing compares with Battle Frontier, the neatest concept introduced in Gen 3

I wouldn't say ORAS post game is that much better, but heck, it has stuff to do + Pokenav lets you capture some special Pokemon while getting the features of X/Y in your game, is most likely that your playtime will be longer in this one compared to X/Y, but definitely, that's your choice at the end of the day

Story Wise, I prefered ORAS. (Haven't gotten to finishing Sun yet, just starting.)

I felt XY was weak with their villian team, even though ORAS was/were remakes, I enjoyed the villians and how interesting it was story wise. But that's my opinion.

Sun/Moon is the winner for better graphics, the character animations are smoother and I felt they improved from XY. But, I hate to be nitpicky, but am I the only one that dislikes the new Sun/Moon shiny star? You know, when a Pokemon comes out and it sparkles, it looks like they just put a star stamp and called it a day. ORAS and XY did this better with the multiple sparkles, it looks nicer imo.

You enjoyed Team Magma and Aqua? That's interesting because they're commonly seen as the worst villains. I like them, and it may be bias because Gen 3 was, for lack of a better term, my jam. I played the crap out of Ruby and Emerald, when I got back into playing Pokemon in 2014, I originally settled for just Gen 3, get those games. But then money was coming in, I wanted to expand. Just a few months after getting the Gen 3 games, ORAS came out, heart warming moments like the opening cutscene featuring the intro from Prof. Birch, directly from the GBA games. Ahhh.

Playing Sun/Moon though, kind of dampens the visual experience when going back to Gen 6, because the graphics is a huge leap, though unfortunately more susceptible to slowdowns.

Yeah, I guess I enjoyed how cheesey they were, but they weren't as bad compared to Team Flare from what I think. Those moments that were heartwarming are some of the times that I enjoyed playing the game, I still play it sometimes and it always feels like yesterday from when I completed the Post-Game arc. I also fell in love with the music, especially Zinnia's theme and the villian themes as well.

And I agree about Sun/Moon. I just started but even on my old 3ds where it usually works well, but I feel it lags similar to how XY did. (Especially with dialogue, uuuugh.)

Ordered Omega Ruby earlier today. The cover and case look really nice with its own 3DS coloured case and what I assume is a dinosaur. After OR, I think I might get Sun.

I recommend both games, though like I said, ORAS can be cheesey with their villians, but you'll have fun. Sun is also a go-to as well, it's fantastic and the new Pokemon are really nice. (My icon is the water starter from Sun/Moon ofc.) Both games come with tutorials on how the game works, but once they leave you on your own, you have to memorize everything from typing to levels to potential movesets. If I were you, I'd choose the water starter, but I won't force you, but I recommend Mudkip to make the game easier.

And you're right, he does represent a dinosaur!

I'd go with Sun just because of more pokés, but you might hate Z-moves. I despise Tapu and Ultra Beast not being categorized as 'special' and banned from the 'Special Pokémon: Banned' list. One thing I did like, no more need for multiple HM-only 'mon. You can literally set Fly, Surf, etc, to a direction input.

One thing I REALLY didn't like about OR/AS was having people automatically join on your 3DS friends list, as in: you use GTS, the person who trades with you becomes your 'acquaintance' and gets their FC registered to your friends. Automatically. Maybe there's an option to stop it, but I literally have no desire to keep trading in OR/AS. I do like the Player Search System more than festival plaza.

So for someone who doesn't care about Mega Stones, you'll be fine. If you ever heard of horde battles, Sun has a mildly annoying revision of it: SOS battle. There's an added feature that lets you photograph 'mon, but don't think Pokémon Snap. If you like bikes, multiple fishing rods, safari anything, gym battles, or not having to press 'A' to walk in buildings, your nostalgia will be decreased.

The music in Sun is good, the graphics look pretty good (better with outlines off), the story is nothing mind blowing, but there are many 'questionable' things people say which are hilarious if you've got a dirty mind. Battle Royal is a strategic style of fighting, but I miss triple battles.

I don't know your limitations, but if you can get both, get OR first, then come back to Sun when things have been 'fixed.' If you only want one, go with Sun, but know that Lunala is better than Solagaleo. Even the card of Lunala is better than the card of Solagaleo.

Well, you got my future point in the past. Good stuff.

I agree, but I wish they didn't do SOS battles. It's tedious and I prefered hordes and the PSS as well. I didn't play much of Sun/Moon since I just recently got it, but it's fine so far. I just wish the starter cutscene didn't take so long.

You'd think a 'potamanz masstur' would be able to decide which 'mon to throw a pokéball at if there was more than one wild 'mon. I didn't mind the scene, but I think they should've had types that wouldn't wreck you before you got to a pokécenter. First time in ~20 years that I was nearly fainted by a wild pokémon before having a center heal me. It screwed up my grind plans, but thankfully, I don't X-locke.

I also find it funny that there's an item to make SOS occur, but no item to stop it.
