It's possible. It's gonna happen. But not soon. Thing is, everybody said a PSX emulator wouldn't be possible and would never happen. Look where we are now.
The same will happen with a N64 emulator. There's probably someone working on it as we speak, but just not making anything public because people would get their hopes up, and if stuff goes wrong and the project fails
that person will probably get attacked for it.

It's being worked on.

People got Mario 64 running on the PSP very well, I think something like that, optimized for a specific game, should work, I think on PSP it had to have no sound, but I think they added sound support later.

Both the N64 and PSP use MIPS cores. The 3DS has ARM cores.

The 3DS is roughly twice as powerful as the PSP, but the same emulation can't be achieved due to those architectural differences.

If anything, I won't expect a playable N64 emulator on old 3DS.

Did you literally register just to tell me this?
nah actually, this is the account it made for my facebook since my college email got deleted and i wanted to associate everything with my normal gmail :(
but also felt compelled to tell you that yeah. in case you were wondering why you can't emulate the wii, it's definitely not your ram. you have twice more than enough lol.

I wouldn't expect anything for a long ASS TIME. Some people just like to be like "oh its been a while since someone ask, why not pop the question again"

bro not to revive a dead thread but a pc with 4gb of ram could run a wii game if it had a half decent processor and graphics card.
Theoretically, you only need a computer with 256 MB of RAM to run an OS and an emulator. The Wii itself only has 89 MB of RAM and if you use Lubuntu which is a lightweight distribution of Ubuntu, you can run a Wii game on a computer with 256 MB of RAM as long as you have a decent processor (and a decent graphics card if you have an Intel or Nvidia graphics card. If you have an ATI graphics card, you don't even need a half decent graphics card as the graphics card in the Wii was just a tad bit under powered but, was run by an ATI card. (That is just a theory however. No proof to back up my theory as of now...))

Unfortunately though, being able to run and store the software-side horsepower needed to emulate a wii game, you'd withuot a doubt need much more than 256MB of ram to run a wii game. At least 2GB, and then the Linux version of Dolphin would need to be extremely well optimized (Which it isn't.) You do need a half-decent graphics card, at least a GTX(5+)60 series or above. And probably anything 2500k and above would work in the dual core 3.3ghz+ range. It doesn't need to be extremely expensive or powerful, but i'd say that's a happy medium to recommended specs. DEFINITELY not 256mb and an equivalent graphics card, you need a lot of headroom from there.

Okay. This is starting to bug me. Do I have to overclock something, or what?
OS: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
RAM: 8 GB
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-5200U
GPU: NVIDIA GEFORCE 940M
VRAM: 2 GB
First, apparently the linux version of dolphin is not very good.

Not only that, but emulation is very cpu dependent, and the 5200u is a very underpowered dual-core processor which is held up mostly by its hyperthreading capabilities.

Your graphics card isn't helping the case much either, most mobile graphics cards perform extremely poorly, especially below the 50mark like I said. A GT940M is leagues below even a 950M, so that's another thing counting against you.

The only thing you have going for you is your RAM, which is a perfectly acceptable amount. I don't recommend overclocking a machine you're running linux on. It's unnecessary, seeing as your problem probably lies mostly in the fact you're using Linux at all... Especially Ubuntu, which in my opinion has become an over-glorified bloatware filled slow mess. Linux is cool and all, but if you're looking to game and use the most power you have from your hardware, I'd make the switch to Windows, but even then you may not get excellent Dolphin performance as the rest of your components are slightly underpowered. Dolphin is also a finnicky mistress, it ran much better on my 760 than my 980ti, with the cache built fine into both builds. Like all emulators, it reacts to all hardware differently!

I am not sure what do you want to do with Dolphin, perhaps you said it before but I am too lazy to look in previous pages, anyway.

A long time ago I had a Notebook setup that was steadily inferior to yours in each component.
A Corei5 2450M CPU (somewhat below 5200U), an Nvidia 630M GPU (definitively below 940M), and 8GB of RAM (that is the same).
With this system, that had Windows 7, I played many games on Dolphin, but as a test case I will talk about Xenoblade Chronicles (as I played that one quite a lot there).
The game ran perfect with native Wii normal resolution, but if you tried to use an improved resolution it lagged from time to time. Also PCSX2 worked "flawless" (always native resolution), at least with Tales of the Abyss.
Short version of all this: It is not that your hardware can't handle it, probably the Windows version would run fine.

Like I said though, some hardware works, some hardware doesn't. And besides, the biggest thing I said is that he's running on Linux, which could completely render every component in his machine useless.

N64 possible yeah , doing it is another thing you got ctr64 in development but that all we got for now . But now that we got a bootrom exploit maybe we can make one that boot directly when you boot the 3ds just saying, so it can make it run slightly faster maybe it is not how it work but n64 is a hell of a problem when it come to emulation , my opinion is wait for the switch that thing pretty sure gonna have Classic VC eshop from nes ,snes ,gb,gbc gba to n64 even gamecube and wii titles(maybe 3ds and ds,dsi but idk)! Nintendo know it that it need VC to make good sales that why the joycon can split x2 player for all oldies! And people gonna hack it for sure like always so just do the wait game and leave o3ds and n3ds alone with n64 emulation it is useless at this point.

We couldn't use a bootrom solution unless we get N64 emulated on GBA :P. But, that's a project for another century :D

N64 is already running on a GBA.
