Hacking Installing A9lh - Confused on a step

Hey all. I'm installing A9lh on my N3DS (9.0-20). Under Section III - ctr transfer, it states:

8. Clear Home Menu’s extdata by navigating to the following folder on your SD card: /Nintendo 3DS/(32 Character ID)/(32 Character ID)/extdata/00000000/

• EUR Region: Delete 00000098
• JPN Region: Delete 00000082
• USA Region: Delete 0000008f
• CHN Region: Delete 000000A1
• KOR Region: Delete 000000A9
• TWN Region: Delete 000000B1

My system is USA, so after navigating to the 0000008f folder... do I delete the contents of that folder (which leads to a folder named 000000)?

Thanks! It was a dumb question since it clearly states to "clear Home Menu's extdata", but just wanted to make sure that it explicitly meant to delete, and also wanted to make sure I deleted the correct folder.

I dont understand why the guide has to make it more complicated than it needs to be. Just use a spare SD card to do a9lh... after done put in your original SD card and you are set. No need to navigate anywhere or clear anything or worrying about wiping stuff.

Well actually you do because that folder will be created when you're on 2.1 and it will prevent you from booting later.

I agree with that, I always use a spare SD card to do it but not everyone has a spare SD card laying around.

3DS comes with a 4GB one, thats the one I used. There is no way anyone here uses that as their main one? Thats not nearly enough space.

Well actually you do because that folder will be created when you're on 2.1 and it will prevent you from booting later.

Thats not true, you go back to your normal Sysnand after OTP.

Rough steps:

1) Take out your sdcard and put in spare one. There is no emunand on spare one so ull be booted into normal Sysnand
2) Do OTP including restoring your old sysnand after grabbing OTP
3) Insert your real SD card, it will boot into emunand that exists on it, if it doesnt proceed making emunand.

Try booting up an N3DS after installing a9lh and doing a 9.2 CTR transfer and not deleting the extdata. I bet you'll get a black screen.

I followed Plailect's guide at the time when we still had to downgrade a redNAND/emuNAND on my 2DS, using the supplied 4GB card. I had to transfer NAND backups to the PC everytime I would make one since there was so little space to work with
But yeah, in my 3DS and N3DS, I have 64GB and 128GB respectively, the 2DS is only for homebrew testing purposes so that's why it most likey won't have a bigger card since it's not really necessary.

True - the guide used to make you do that. I guess now that they understand why it happens, and the fact that the instructions confused some noobs, they changed it to what it is now.

The whole point is because you are using another SD card its blank, you dont need to delete anything.

You do realise that the console makes a new Nintendo 3DS folder if the SD card doesn't contain one, right? And it is going to create that folder that you have to delete, right? It isn't going to stay blank for very long.

Right, it creates it on boot up.

Yes, so you boot up on 2.1 - and the folder is created.

Unless you want to get a new SD card and copy on all the files you need from the old card except the Nintendo 3DS folder, just to avoid deleting that folder? That would be more effort, not sure why you'd do that.

I think we are talking about different things. My original post was to say that you can avoid backing up your "real" SD card by using a spare for a9lh process, then putting in your "real" one to boot into. I know this works well if you are convering from menuhax to a9lh, and this eliminates like 3/5 of the guide and saves a lot of time, no need to backup nands/sd cards.

No, we're taking about the same thing. You thought it was unnecessary to delete the home menu extdata if you used a new card. Which isn't true.

What does emuNAND have to do with anything? The guide never instructs you to make an emuNAND at any point. And if you put in a new SD card, you have to copy over all the SafeArm9Installer files plus your NAND backup which would take a while to transfer. If you don't have two SD slots on your PC you have to do this TWICE (transfer to your computer, put in new SD, transfer into new SD).

Why are you talking about emuNANDs, which have nothing to do with anything? All this effort including spending several minutes transferring files around could have been avoided simply by replacing all your steps including the extra ones you left out with:
1) install a9lh
2) delete the offending folder
3) restore backup

Edit: Also, having an emuNAND affects absolutely zero in the main guide. Everything is done on sysNAND, the emuNAND can happily sit there on your SD card, ignored, until its time to shine in the optional Move EmuNAND section. So if you're doing all of this in an attempt to avoid booting into emuNAND - the guide already does this.

My O3DS & my friend N3DS run on stock 4GB that come with the console.
