It's usually a good idea to update Luma (the arm9loaderhax.bin file) first before updating.

If you followed THE guide Luma should be set up to update itself, right?

If you're on sysnand or even emunand with A9LH you're safe, make sure to check the system settings in the config of Luma so you don't get confused

After following the guide and installing A9LH and Luma are you on sysnand or emunand?

After following the guide and installing A9LH and Luma are you on sysnand or emunand?
If you followed the guide as written you won't have an emuNAND, just sysNAND. And no, Luma won't update itself. You can update it using Luma updater or manually by pasting the new arm9loaderhax.bin onto your SD card.
