Hi all,

I have a standard r4 v2 card, will this work with a 2ds or is a newer card needed?

Thanks
Haven't heard of the v2 revision of the card but it sounds pretty old which means it has probably been blocked and will not work on the official 3DS/2DS firmware.
But, if you install a Custom firmware on your 2DS, you will most likely be able to use it.

Thanks for the quick response, I did get a 8gb sd card for it but later learned that it will only take a 2gb card maximum.

I just want to know I can get it to work before I go buy a 2gb card.

How do you install a custom firmware, anywhere to read about this?

Thanks

Right here: https://3ds.guide/
If you haven't updated your 2DS in a while you might be in luck, otherwise you'll need an already modified console or a hardware modification to complete the process.
Good luck :)

Sadly I updated them both yesterday ! Don't really fancy having to open it up so would prob be easier just to get a new card, any recommendations ?

Thanks again

A 2DS is one of the easiest ones to modify but if you don't fancy doing it yourself, you can also choose to pay someone else to do it for about the same price as a brand new flashcart. The list of trusted people who take these kind of requests are here:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/list-of-hardmod-installers-by-region.414224/

A Custom firmware brings a lot more benefits than a single DS type flashcart so I definitely recommend doing so if possible.

Otherwise, this is the one I have: http://www.nds-card.com/ProShow.asp?ProID=149
It works on all firmwares, is arguably cheap and has perfect game compatibility as far as I know. Do beware that this flashcart will only play DS title, not 3DS ones.

Thanks for the responses, the 2DS does look to be on the highest update so the only option on that guide is to downgrade which means me opening this bad boy up.

It doesn't look to difficult so may have more of a read and give it a try.

If I do it this route do I not need one of the R4 cards?

Thanks

There's also the option of doing it with a system transfer using a modified console. Do you know anyone who has a 3DS/2DS? Check if they have a firmware compatible without the need of a downgrade, modify theirs first and then modify yours using theirs. It is a bit of a hassle but if you've got a day to spare, it's safer than soldering and might just be worth it.

You do want to have a bit of soldering experience before attempting to perform a hardmod.

If you do go this route, you will not need to buy any extra DS flashcarts to play DS games as you'll be able to use the one you already have. It is currently the only way to run DS games on a 3DS system.

tomodachi life is a 3ds game, as the r4 card linked only does nds roms , there is the option of sky 3ds but it would be cheaper to get your console downgraded and that opens the door to much more than just a sky 3ds can offer, as sky 3ds can only play games that got a retail release whilst cfw can do homebrew/ rom translations and rom hacks/dlc eshop only games etc

Sure it does. It doesn't work on the OFW, CFW patches the whitelist to allow use of older flashcarts.

That's for "newer" carts like R4i/AK2i, which at least works on DSi, older carts like original R4, AK2, doesn't.

The history of DS flash cart is very long.
