I have heard somewhere that you can screen record, downgrade, and unbrick your device if you hardmod. Is this true? If not what does hardmodding do exactly?

screen record,
While this is literaly true (installing a capture card requires hardware modding), the common meaning of "hardmod" is connecting the internal storage of your console to an SD reader, for the purposes of:

1- full system backup and restore, which can be used to fix a handful of cases where A9LH+Decrypt9 can't be used to restore
2- kernel downgrading, so that you can install 9.2 on an 11.x console without the DSiware exploits.

Other things that are "hard mods" but not "hardmod" include installing Qi wireless charging or a Bluetooth audio output, or boosting the headphone socket, ...

Unless they meant screen streaming with NTR: you need CFW and a New 3DS to do that, and a hardmod can help, but is not required (see my point 2 above)

I rather enjoy a life of taking it easy. I haven't reached that life yet though.
