I'll be receiving a PHAT CECHA PS3 in a few days and it has a bad disc drive. I was looking at the Cobra ODE and was wondering if any of the users here could share their knowledge, and experiences, with this device.

Would I need to mod the PS3 to install and successfully use this device?

No you don't need too mod it, but you would need too hardmod it. ODE and IDPS are absolute shit, but if you have no other choice go for it.

I don't know what "spoofing" is. Is there a post that explains all the features CFW opens up?

I'd like to use this PHAT primarily to play PS1 and PS2 games. Without a functional disc drive I figured I could use this device to play PS1 and PS2 ISO's. Would this be easier than say, trying to play PS3 ISO's?

Well if you are risking too open your console for ODE then you should risk your console too flash it. Yes with ODE you can do all of that, but on CFW it is easier.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

I wish I could flash it for you, but you have a PHAT PS3 and I don't have the right flasher for that model.

I was reading a little about flashing last night. If you have any links to good info I'd appreciate it.

Also, is downgrading and installing CFW considered softmodding? Because I may be willing to go the mod chip route if it gets rid of the headaches. I wouldn't be taking this console online anyway.

ODE still needs a fully working drive, your PS3 is a 4 port, with two 128mb nand, it's kinnda pain to downgrade with hardware downgraders.
softmodding is only and option if your ps3 is on 3.55 and below...

That's deflating. :(

I've been reading about the pain with downgraders. As far as softmodding I won't know until tomorrow, but I assume it's passed ofw 3.55.

Is the PS3 modding scene completely dependent on downgrading your firmware to 3.55? Are there no PS3 mod-chips?

no you don't need to downgrade back to 3.55 just to jailbreak the ps3, these days you just dump the NAND/NOR, patch it, inject it back and install a CFW. so you can be on 4.81 OFW patch the NAND/NOR and install the CFW. There's a software downgrade method via service dongle (CFW PSP can be used) but only works on 3.56 OFW.

You do know the process of getting the NOR/NAND is the same process as downgrading right? You would still need to do the same things and have the same flashers.

Yeah it downgrades the tokens but stays the same firmware and not neccesary need to go to 3.55 ofw firmware especially with some ps3 that has a minfirmver of 3.56

He has a phat ps3. All phat ps3 consoles can be downgraded to 3.55. It would be easier for him to do that.

Yeah he could do that, but going to 3.55 ofw is not neccessary anymore and just adds more steps to jailbreak a ps3.

But yeah... sometimes we still need to go to 3.55 ofw usingbl the 3.55 downgrader pup just to fix the token and if the cfw has not been properly Q/A. There are some cfw pup like that

If he doesn't do it then he won't learn anything. Also all he needs to do is go on 3.55 OFW then update to any REX Rebug above 4.65.2. It already has QA and Debug Settings. Then he can easily convert to DEX. Things have changed. I know the method you are talking about and I did that too, but now it it's not necessary.

So I got it, but it ended up being a CECHE and not a CECHA. It was free so I can't complain, but I was really looking forward to hardware compatibility for PS2 games.

Zero, I've read some of your posts where you claim the Slim models are the best to flash. What is it about the Slims that make them better than the Phats? Do they offer better compatibility? Is there a reliable way to USB load PS2 ISO's on a slim with above average compatibility?

Slim, doesn't overheat as much, much smaller, has good PS2 and PS1 emulation (Not as good as PHATs with the PS2 chips inside them.), has actual buttons, is easier to take apart than a PHAT, and they are all NOR making them easier to downgrade. If you prefer PHAT that is fine.
