Yes you need custom firmware for this to work! (I'm on Luma3DS N3DS)
(This thread will cover mostly on SaveDataFiler)

- SaveDataFiler/JKSV Save Manager (Any Save Managers that can decrypt saves)
(JKSV will be able to import it but sometimes data gets corrupted for no reason)
A way to access your SD Main Directory I just use the MicroSDNetwork in the 3DS Settings since I have good speed.
PKHex Latest Build: https://mega.nz/#F!jcdXyBBS!SCvymhsXXonrjOy2w7oCEw
I update it frequently and if download doesn't hit me up so I can update this thread.
Here we go!
Open the SaveDataFiler that you installed onto your 3DS; Hover over 0175E(Moon) or 01648(Sun) and press R+X to remove the secure value.
Now Extract user data from 0175E(Moon) or 01648(Sun) by pressing Y then press A to export to SD Card.
So you exported a savefile huh? Now it should be in your SD Card Directory and if you have to find a way to access your 3DS SD Directory. I'm using Nintendo's MicroSDReader through the my private network.
On my 3DS SD Directory find the folder "filer" this contains the backup save of all saves exported with SaveDataFiler. Then go into "UserSaveData" which contains all the backup saves exported from SaveDataFiler.
Inside the "UserSaveData" folder you will have a random folder depends on how many game you backed up wih SaveDataFiler many different folders or just one if it's your first time using it. We are looking for the folders that inside contains 0175e(Moon) and 01648(Sun).
Inside the 0175e or 01648 folder we are looking for the "main" file which is the decrypted save that can be used with PKHex or any other save editing software.(Should be 432kb for filesize)
I recommend drag the "main" file onto the desktop and making a backup of it like "main_backup" then editing it on the desktop through PKHex

Send it back to Pokemon Sun/Moon just go bring the edited "main" file you used with PKHex and drag it into the 0175e/01648 folder that had "main" file then replace it.
Restore the save with SaveDataFiler by going into the Homebrew itself and using the third tab called "SD" just press A on the file to import. It's either 0175e(Moon) or 01648(Sun).
After you import it you can go back and double check by deleting the secure value like before and then exit out of SaveDataFiler and play the game.
