By Nvidia Shield you mean the handheld or Shield Android TV? If it's the handheld, go for it, if you can find it for a good price. It's been long discontinued.

Which one do you want honestly? I have all 3 and they are great :P

Shield portable is exactly what it is, portable, imagine it like a portable xbox 360. Only problem is out dated, with the 2013 release, and having the Tegra 4, it would be nice if this was updated to Tegra X1 and resold. :)

Shield tablet K1is probably what people had wanted the first time the shield portable was released more updated than the portable it has Tegra K1 which is better than tegra 4. It has a 5MP camera (Or higher i think) Takes pics at 2K (Is higher than 1920X1080) Dunno the exact stats, records 1080P video at 30 fps, can screen cap for recording videos, of games you play, or stream direct to twitch services. you may wanna invest in a shield controller to help with that though.

Shield TV has the best money. Two options at 16GB for $200 or 500GB for $300 you basically have a console that outclasses PS3 and Xbox 360. Able to play PC games like a boss as if you actually had one, it has the almighty Tegra X1 and built in ethernet or wifi, bluetooth, 3.0 usb support, micro sdXC support and also built in chromecast as well. So you can use any other device with chromecast support on it. (Example your PC with chrome web browser) and you can also do mirrorcast which basically uses chrome cast like wii u tablet. 2 screen projection. You may have to sideload some apps as the one in the built in google play store are very limited to what it can find there, but as long as you install exfile explorer, no problem with app importing.

mx player also recommended for good playback due to hardware encoding for all 3 devices, as stated by the site offically recommended. Really good. ALL have 4K support. dualband connection for 5GHZ AC and 2.4GHZ B/G/N

One thing to note, the portable is less supported now and days, having up to 5.1 marshmellow, while the tablet and shield has lolipop 6.0, each device will receive updates individually, meaning just cause one got updated they all will not, is all time based. Expect apps that haven't been updated to work with newer versions to not work until fixed.

If you have any other questions you can ask me :)

No, good, yes and yes to your questions.

Edit: By the way, the Shield Tablet can't and won't receive an update to Android Nougat because the Tegra K1 is 32 bit. Android Nougat requires 64 bit.

  1. Sheild tv, has some limitations to what it finds in the google play store, it only finds android tv compatible apps, not general user android apps like for tablets/cellphones, the tablet play store has no restrictions as far as i know. You can side load apps onto the android tv but may not work 100%, compared to psvita and psvita tv situation, where the tv device lacks gryo sensors, camera, touch screen (Which can be emulated by mouse, or right stick of controller, only some actually work, like xbox 360 or official shield controller, others will need mouse emulation like some nyko bluetooth controls)
  2. Geforce now as the paid service for online game streams, i don't really use it, is $7 a month for selected titles, which do not interest me. I was part of beta, and games was displayed at 1080P and 60 FPS on 5G ac wifi, worked well for most part, as of now, not my knowledge if it improved. The games you can play are all cloud based, so no installs at all, streamed, just like playstation now. You can also buy games to download to system (I have metal gear rising revengence, but there is more like borderlands pre-sequal, resident evil 5) Some games even if streamed you still have to buy, like dead or alive 5 last round or resident evil revelations 2, you must buy them then you can stream it from cloud. They also give you a Code to use on steam to redeem pc game in case you wanna do pc stream instead of cloud stream. You can only download and install games on sheild tv, the tablet does not support it, so cloud stream or pc stream is the only options.
  3. There is a HDMI mini port, it supports 4K in console mode. If you need more info on console mode you can find it at the nvidia shield website.
  4. The tablet does indeed have a key mapper, using shield controller, you can map touch screen functions to the controller to play your games with, you can also upload your settings and share with others or download them to use. You can basically play touch screen only games with the controller this way, except i dunno if it works with any controller, just the shield controller.

Android n requires 64 bit? i didn't know! (I have seen custom roms for 32 bit devices?)
They were probably based on a beta version. Google stripped support for 32 bit SoCs in the release version of Nougat.

How long is the Tablet battery?
It depends on your use obviously. Since you want to game on it, note that the battery percentage decreases even with the power adapter connected. The power adapter can't keep up with the power consumption of the K1 SoC if it runs heavy games. Don't bother with other tablets if you want to game with it.

I own the tablet. one of the best devices i have ever owned. It's great for older game system emulation for systems like DS, PSP, and older. Get the shield controller. it might look funky, but the button mapping feature allows you to really use all of the tablets features. it even rocks when just browsing the web. i was waiting for the x1 tablet, but sadly they canceled it. i would have bought it in a heart beat.

The Shield Tablet (which has a Tegra K1) is much faster than the Shield Portable (which has a Tegra 4 processor). The biggest advantage of the K1 is in the GPU department, where not only is the GPU more powerful but it is also more modern. For me the big factor that made me decide against the Shield Portable and in favor of the Shield Tablet was that the Shield Portable does not support OpenGL ES 3.0, which means that newer Android games that require this newer version of OpenGL ES 3 will not work. In addition, certain emulators that require this newer API will not run (Dolphin being one example of an emulator that requires OpenGL ES 3 and will not work on the Shield Portable, not that it really performs that well on the Shield Tablet but at least it runs on it). One other smaller thing on the Shield Portable that I found off-putting was the inclusion of a physical fan which is odd for a portable device. Personally, I prefer the Shield Portable's form factor, but with everything considered the Shield Tablet is a much better device for Android gaming and emulation (plus there are third-party mounts that let you connect the controller to the tablet and make it function more like handheld).
