Sweet, done that, thanks. Just out of interest where are save games stored originally? In NAND?, on the cart?
Saves for downloaded games are on the SD card and cartridge saves are stored on the cartridge, so you can back them up. Save data for system titles such as Streetpass is stored on the nand and since the system is on 11.0, there's no way to back up that data, so you'll permanently lose that

Thanks. So does that mean I need to insert all of his cartridges one at a time and use JKSM to back up each save? Bear in mind that at the end of the process his o3DS will be hacked and using his NNID (so would the saves on the carts still "just work"?)

You don't need to back up the saves on the cartridges because they're not stored on the system. You only need to backup the saves for downloaded titles.

Just for adding to the discussion a user was having about "the Fieldrunners game bought without NNID will be deleted after formatting" and some other nonsenses...

http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/166/~/what-is-lost-after-formatting-the-system-memory?

Read below in that Nintendo official support page:
  • Nintendo eShop software licenses and funds will not be removed if an Nintendo Network ID has not been linked
Software licenses are only wiped out if you had an NNID linked, since the formatting unlinks the NNID from the sytem. If you bought the game without any NNID linked, you can format as many times as you wish, and you'll still be able to redownload it.

And, what can't be downloaded from eShop without NNID is anything that is downloadable for "free", (excepting updates for games). That includes, but doesn't limit to, demos, tools apps, some videos, and free-to-play games. Just as @Quantumcat said.

This is just for clarifying to some users that could still be struggling to understand this, as it seems the OP has now managed to advance in the downgrade process.

Bugger, Fieldrunners won't run on my hacked o3DS, just a black screen. Deleted it and redownloaded but same problem :(

Updated SysNAND. I followed the entire guide to end up with my o3DS running A9LH and v11.
Installed something for patching the TWL firm? If you don't know what I'm asking, you probably didn't.

Check troubleshooting, believe the guide has something for if you can't run dsiware/ds games
Exactly this.

Sorry, I followed the guide to the letter, so your answer will probably be obvious, but not to me :(

Follow this troubleshooting.

And I meant that if you didn't know what I was asking, you didn't patch TWL firm, sorry if that sounded rude. You'll restore the original TWL firm in that troubleshoot since it sometimes and without explanation stops working after the actual CTRNAND downgrade process.

Don't worry. And good luck in the process.

I know you already did it before, but unfortunately there's always that 0.1% at least of randomness thrown in there. I hope everythings works out in the end. :)

Fingers crossed. So my process is

Get him to delete anything he doesn't want off his o3DS as a cleanup process.
Back up any saves from the SD with JKSM
Don't worry about cartridge saves as they are on the carts.
System format his (target) o3DS
Get source o3DS sorted (Fieldrunners and exploit) and system transfer
Go through downgrade on target o3DS and then follow guide to get to A9LH

Exactly.

However, just don't mind the parts about the NNID in the DSiWare downgrade part of the Plailect's guide, it will work without NNID really nicely. (I don't know if he has updated that thing, but before, the guide stated that you needed an NNID for the purchase and transfer, which you don't).

Everything else is alright. Also, I would recommend not re-linking the NNID immediately (I read you wanted to use the DSiWare downgrade on another 3DS too), because if you do, you'll link the DSiWare purchase to the NNID you link first to the console. So, tell him to wait a week before linking the NNID so you can do the process on the other 3DS with the same purchase without worrying about transferring the NNID from one to another.

If you don't mind paying $5 more, then there's nothing to worry about, just about waiting a week.

Cool. I've taken a NAND dump and SD Card copy of my hacked source o3DS from after I purchased and ran field runners. I'll try restoring that one to my source after the system transfer to see if I retain field runners on the source

Monster Hunter Generations and Fantasy Life saves on your SD card so use JKSM and backup their Exdata.

Cheers. Having worried about it all, he's told me the only thing he's interested in saving is PK Omega Ruby lol

If you restore the NAND backup in the source system, Fieldrunners will be there, of course. However, a System Transfer won't transfer it anymore, since on Nintendo servers it isn't linked to your source console anymore, but to the target console. So, it's the same as if you had installed it via CIA or other non official methods.
