Hello. I was just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction.
I've ordered a nintendo 3ds that supposedly comes with 4.2E/4.5E firmware.

I want to be able to play roms specifically Pokemon platinum, pokemon black and white and majoras mask.

Is there a way for me to currently be able to do this without paying for a flashcart?

I don't mind cfw. If so could someone point me in the right direction to a guide and what will I need.
Many thanks for your help.

Majora's mask can be played without a flashcart, but the pokemon games are ds titles, so you need a ds flashcart, which only cost 10 pounds.

Edit: Wow. 2 posts before me....

DS games currently require a flashcart, sorry.
They are cheap however (about $10). Even old cards like the original R4 are compatible too so you may already have one that will work.

Refer to the guide the dude above posted for cfw.

Thanks for your very quick replies all. I did try using search functions on the website but I can't make heads or tails of what's currently relevant.

Even with custom firmware and homebrew ds games aren't playable?

I assume my best options then would be cfw and a ds flashcard?

Yeah, cfw and ds flashcart is your best combination. I added this to my previous post https://gbatemp.net/threads/ds-i-mode-hacking-progress-thread.413015

It could end up being exactly what you want, but the progress is questionable and there's not really a date in sight when you could expect it, so... Yeah.

You can't play Platinum, Black, or White without flashcards. You can get MM with CFW, however.
You can follow this guide to get CFW.

Thank you. Could I go down the road of installing customer firmware for the 3ds games and the pick up a r4 card for the ds games? Anything else I need?

Appreciate the help. Once it comes I will follow the guide posted to install the custom firmware. I'll have to start looking at which one of the r4 cards I need for the ds games and how that thing works and also where I can buy it.

I wouldn't mind paying for a flashcard if there were one that was really simple like it needed no custom firmware or anything you just dropped the 3ds/ds roms on it and plugged in and played.

You can use nds-cards.com as they're a sponsor of GBATemp. You can use any R4. IIRC, even the original that doesn't have a banner. You can use Apache Thunder's loader for it.

The flashcarts are simple to understand. They just need things like wood firmware, which you can just copy onto the SD and never have to think about it ever again.

Not sure if there's any cart that doesn't need some kind of firmware files on it? Guess somebody else would need to chime in on that one

Unfortunately no such thing exists. Another alternative to the R4 is the DSTT (NOT the DSTTi). It works great on the 3DS with Apache Thunder's flashcard loader and it only costs 8$~ on nds-card.com if you don't mind the long shipping times. (Around 2.5 weeks for the US. Probably shorter for the UK since they're based in China.)

OK so would I be right in saying by installing custom firmware and buying one of these r4 cards and putting the wood firmware on there I'd be able to play 3ds roms via freeshop or something like that then I could use the r4 card for the ds roms?

As I said above, I'd recommend you getting a, at least, 32GB SD card as installing a lot of games won't be possible with the default 4GB one.

OK once again much appreciated. I'll give it all a go and with any luck I can play those games and not have to pay £30+ a pop for each one and only pay for the r4 card. #studentlife
