Hacking Would you ever recommend Gateway's Time Machine a9lh install?

Can you think of any combination of circumstances where someone would be better off with Gateway a9lh than the community methods? (This can be something you link to to show how the whole community is in agreement on this, when a newbie accuses you of bias...)

Maybe if Gateway's A9LH matures a lot.

But right now it's still a private beta with a pretty scary disclaimer, and I'm at a loss as to why people install something that's clearly labled "Files on this page should be treated with extreme care and only used by advanced users who have access to a way to restore their 3DS NAND. Users should have a valid/known good copy of their NAND before proceeding! Use at your own risk!"

That and plug-and-play support. No having to install .3DS files. Just drag onto the Micro SD, pop in the Gateway, put the Gateway in the 3DS, and you're off to the races.

But other than that, I wouldn't really support their A9LH installation method. The current one is open-source and has been contributed to by the community many several times over, whereas the Gateway one was in-house tested and they don't really interact with the public that much.

For that benefit, Sky3DS is a better all-around option, for now.
There is community work on reverse-engineering the workings of the Gateway3DS card. Currently, with shinyquagsire's release, you can address the microSD in the Gateway microSD card as a block device. It seems to appear on the CARD interface verbatim, with all the ROMs in it.

In the near future, ROM loading may be possible, it'll just require some work on the 3DS side - with either a "loader" application to select a ROM and run it, or with a homebrew OSD and patches to the system.

I didn't really pay much attention when gateway was putting bricking-code in the loader to prevent other flashcarts from using the loader, but this "time machine" shit is scummy bullshit as it "marries" your 3ds to the gateway cart.

Even though this thread is obviously subjected to preemptive bias due to the fact most people who argue against the GW A9LH don't have much experience firsthand, and never will. I, a GW owner, probably wouldn't recommend it. Not because it's extremely prone to bricks, because saying that is a bit of a stretch, but moreso because with the new update to Plail's guide, literally any advantage that Gateway's A9LH had, that being a more stable downgrade (yes, strangely enough after testing Gateway Time Machine has served me much better than PlaiSysUpdater), installing A9LH at 2.1, and getting A9LH installed in general, is completely gone. Of course no one would use GW's method even if this weren't the case either since it locks to you to only Gateway.


With that being said, gee, if I could, I'd update my old thread about the status of Gateway and A9LH. Didn't expect to still see people claiming there was a 100% brick rate on N3DS.

As a Gateway user since 4.5 era I say that I would only recommend GW Time Machine when and if it get mature enough to:
- Not brick any 3DS, in any condition.
- Their launcher get FIRM protection (while using emuNAND may be safer than updated sysNAND to noobies it creates problems to install GBA VC and TWL_NAND content that noobies don't know how to solve)
- It actually let you to choose to use GW own launcher or other CFW solution instead of locking down the entire 3DS to GW red card (really, if they aren't willing to solve their own problems involving bugs, AGB_FIRM and TWL_FIRM let their users use solutions that work well alongside the GW launcher).
- It let you chainload A9LH compatbile chainloads.

The main point being not locking users to GW Red Card, I had to buy a second GW unit because the microSD slot of the first got broken eventually (and I dunno if it's easy to replace), I imagine that it's not that hard to some GW Red Cards break to the point where gateway launcher doesn't recognize them.
And I know that GW Time Machine users can restore a dump of their sysNAND in GW launcher, but those backups may get lost, corrupted or whatever, GW should always offer a valid and easy way to revert their A9LH implementation or at least facilitate that users switch to the open source methods.

As someone who has had a Gateway due to owning it back in the 4.5 firmware days, that would be fantastic. I've since shelved it because Luma suits all my needs just fine (thanks to neat stuff like loading tricky DLC properly and the N3DS overclock option), but if people could somehow manage to get a CFW like Luma to load a Gateway Red Card, that would be awesome.

no. i literally installed a9lh on a normal console with menuhax on 9.2 and it took me 15 minutes since no nand dumps are needed. (this was the whoe process of going from 9.2 to 2.1, installing a9lh, and then going to 9.2 again)
