PKGS is basically a non-compressed ZIP/7Z file.
PKG is encapsulated with encryption. That's why you'll need the AES key to extract it.

The file you download from the PSN servers are PKG files, encrypted.
PKGS is NOT what you get from PSN... (AFAIK of course...)
I know "pkgs" and "pkg" are extremely different, I was just stating I didn't know personally whether or not we can extract pkg.

a bit like wbfs, some people were under the impression that it was an official format used by nintendo :D

only make your own formats if you really have to.
we already had vpk for this homebrew stuff, could that not have been used?
and what is more confusing than 'pkgs'...?

- or, please convince me!
No convincing necessary, just a gimmick to call it "Package Installer 2.0" and get a virus on your Vita confuse everyone.

Yes, I was just re-enforcing your post, and also, adding the info about the PKG extraction: "you'll need the AES key to extract it."
Since this key hasn't been "cracked" yet.... =S

Well I'm only going off the person who released Package Installer 2.0

The Post I'm referencing
https://gbatemp.net/goto/post?id=6601577#post-6601577

Their Package Installer 2.0 release post
https://twitter.com/SilicaAndPina/status/764307457791320064

the post I'm referencing from them in verbatim

we acturally cant get any new .pkgs either since we dont have PSN
we are a little stuck

HOWD U KNOW IT WAS GAMEMAKER :O

i would post src code but GM81 is so easy to decompile i cant be bothered.

:D gamemaker is not made for this sorta thing lol it mainly is just executing commands in cmd.exe

.PKGS come from PSN downloads...

there was someone on hackinformer who posted a few download dumps for when the email trick was a thing ive mannaged to convert all of em to pkgs but if we can get PSN access we will be able to get lots more.
we wont even need that giant list of .pkg from wololo XD im gonna get them all in .pkgs when i get access to PSN on 3.60 (or when HenKaKu comes to 3.61)
also when PSN is an option ill have a option in the PC app to create .pkgs

I like my sources. Don't you?

AFAIK, PKGS filetype does not exist.
If you open ANY PKG file in an HEX editor, the header specifically says "PKG" in the beggining.
Also, if you use a proxy accessing the PSN and downloading games for the Vita using it, it will specificaly point you to a PKG file. The same happens with a PS3.
There are, however, at least 2 variants of the filetype, "versions", if you say.
That's why the old ones work in the official PKG installer @ FW 3.20 and the newer ones don't.

Aside from this, "PKG filetype, 2 or more revisions/versions", there aren't any official $ony PKGS filetype.

PKGS is, as already confirmed, a simple uncompressed Zip/7z file. A decrypted, uncompressed packed file, I would say.

As far as I'm aware PKGS is not official as well that's why I've said "Well as far as I'm aware of a pkgs can be MADE from a raw download of a game from PSN" and according to the source I've listed they also said PKGS's are being created from raw PSN downloads if you want to ask my source I'm sure they'll gladly explain to you how it all works if you're confused, or interested that might clear things up for us both here

The only way to create PKGS is to get the content from PSN using a Vita, install it on the Vita in question, and use the decryption method to get the content over to a PC via FTP, and then repack the content. There's no way to extract a PKG file yet, not without the AES keys, hence my previous post:

"PKG is encapsulated with encryption. That's why you'll need the AES key to extract it."
"The file you download from the PSN servers are PKG files, encrypted."

Also, this method will not work with every game/app, since some of the them close the NEAR app before opening, and NEAR is needed to decrypt the content of the game.

Of course... All of this above is AFAIK...

Interesting "Things"
So when your downloading the raw file from psn... using the method with the eboot from molecule to decrypt .. I'm wondering how do you do this .. The eboot from said game is still encrypted.? Or being a demo it's not?

hes correct when u download of PSN ur getting a .pkg. But as it downloads it extracts and once the download is complete theres a fully extracted pkg that instantly installs. if ur on the home screen. the idea is to wait for it to ALMOST complete then open molecular shell. and wait for the "Downloading Complete" notification. then u can take files from UX0:/BGDL/T and make it download slot 1. then u can just put it in a zip/7z/rar file and rename it to .pkgs thats how its done.

You don't even need a package installer. I've installed some of these PKG demos using the 3.52 email trick. All someone needed to do was repackage them for the email trick.
Now with Henkaku I imagine someone just need to install the pkg on 3.18, grab the files, and put them in a vpk.
A PKG installer would make playing these demos more convenient but I don't believe it would be necessary.

you have? by any chance u still have some of those files? i can easily make them work with PKG installer 2.0

If you're asking about PKG files usable with PKG Installer on a 3.20< FW, you can get a lot of them from these sources:

http://forum.hackinformer.com/viewtopic.php?t=142&start=70
http://wololo.net/talk/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=38342&sid=afd43645fc18b0401b9191eeb730c813

Check around the pages, they are a little spread around, there are even a few that I've personally shared.
I do belive some of mine are already offline, since the hosting service died, but if you really need them, I have them around some DVDs. It's a matter of searching and uping them.

Important! The Old Package Installer Is Now Available On 3.60

The actual Package Installer is now available to those who are willing to risk a very small chance of a soft-brick It requires you to download a .vpk file that'll enable IDU-Mode which is basically the equivalent to Kiosk Mode which currently is the only way to exploit our way into making the old Package Installer useful again all you need to do after you get the IDU-Mode setup is edit your App.db to include the Package Installer, and your good

IMPORTANT THING TO NOTE THOUGH!!!!!!!!!!!

You should follow these tutorials that I'll link below they go into more detail, and that is needed seeing how there are things you need to look out for when setting up the IDU-Mode to AVOID an auto-update to the latest firmware (or worse) like one not having wifi on, or two using the vita update blocker which works for blocking updates just not accessing the PSN store (as of now)

Wait are we actually expecting the kernel hack to be a thing in the following days/weeks? Boy, I think I picked the best time to buy a Vita.

Well.. Technically, AFAIK, HENkaku is a kexploit... So... I guess it's a matter of time...
I smell that the price of FW ver. 3.60 Vita's is gonna raise like hell really soon around ebay and such...
