I saw the tutorial here http://gbatemp.net/threads/the-definitive-guide-to-wii-u-hacking.396828/ and I am on FW --> 5.5.1

Is all I need to do is this part of the tut:
List and launch ELF files located on your SD card or sent through the network. This is the main hub for all of your hacks!
Compatibility:
3.0.0, 3.1.0, 4.0.0, 4.1.0, 5.0.0, 5.1.0, 5.3.2, 5.4.0, 5.5.0, 5.5.1
Downloads:
Homebrew Launcher
Thread:
Homebrew Launcher for Wii U

1. Place at SD:/wiiu/apps/HBL/
2. Point your webserver to the www folder included in the download
3. Open the Internet Browser and enter your webserver IP address
Ex: http://192.168.1.238:8080
Note: You can find yours by right-clicking the Mongoose notification icon in Windows
4. The Homebrew Launcher will run and display all of the hacks that are located at SD:/wiiu/apps/

Yes, if you get HBL working you're set. You can then launch all.your homebrew from there.

Will this allow me to play wii u .iso files?
Nothing plays wii u iso files. Wud files and ISOs need to be extracted into "ready2play" loadiine folders and files. The WUDS and ISOs are huge with lots of padding (empty space) built into them. Please read the definitive guide as all of these questions are answered in there.

Of course, I would have to extract the files (:D) --> I have been reading through teh Definitive Gude (linked in my initial post) - and maybe I am just completely new to it all, I am having trouble understanding the steps/order of what to do.

Ok that's fair. I'll try and help you sort it out. Here are the simple steps.

1. Kexploit has to be ran first everytime you boot your wii u. It has to be ran through the web browser. (Use loadiine.ovh for now. You can learn about self hosting later).

2. The kexploit can be ran by itself. It shows a green screen with some text including the word "illuminati". After that is run you go back to the Web again and then you can launch Loadiine or HBL. (Loadiine and HBL Also have the kexploit built into them so sometimes you can just launch those first but you may have to try a few times).

Thats the basics. Once you get that process down we can move in to other things.

Really the guide could not make it any easier to understand don't get why you are struggling with it. The WiiU is one of the easiest systems to get homebrew running on. All you are basically doing is downloading some stuff then copying it to the sd card then following the steps to load the homebrew menu it's that simple

We keep telling people to read the definitive guide but it can be a bit confusing to a newcomer. It's kinda all over the place right now. It really needs some editing

Agreed! It is all over the place and that is why I am struggling to comprehend exactly what to do. There are headers ... Forum Info, Purchasing A Wii U etc with sub-headers and instructions, which is great *if* you know what you are looking for.

To me, it would be way easier if their is a note added at the top that just says something to the effect of, if your firmware is below this version 5.5.1 then follow the steps under Modding.... and that sub-section would list out what to do much like @Kafluke just did. The basics to get you started!

EDIT -->
This thread https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutoria...server-loadiine-homebrew-launcher-etc.424948/ says I need to have port 80 open. I have port 80 open but I host a few web-servers so I can not use this port for modding. Is it possible to change the port for this?

For example, could I share the folder and on the Wii U game pad go to \\PC_Name\\SharedFolder\\ and the files would be located here

if you want homebrew channel and loadiinde here is what you do , do not be bothered with self hosting the exploit there are sites with it pre hosted that work wel enough
step 1) go to your internet settings and block updates by selecting "do not auto obtain" under DNS settings then enter this for your primary and secondary DNS 107.211.140.065 and then save the settings ,delete all other internt connection profiles if you have any
you should only have one network setting registered and have these DNS settings entered for it

step 2) download this file and extract it to the root or your SD card http://uiiw.tk/rar/WIIuSD.rar
this is the proper folder structure setup for the HBL and loadiine

step 3) go to your wiiu internet browser then go into settings and delete cookies , then enter this address and book mark it "loadiine.ovh"

step 4) go to the usual places, (that IS0 site) and get your games and then just place them on your sd card according to this

setp 5) go to internet browser and and load the loadiine.ovh link you favorited
wait for it to open then select "homebrew launcher illuminati(5.5.0-5.5.1)" from the drop down menu and hit submit , and wait till it says confirming illuminati
when it's done re launch the internet browser again and you're done
this will help you

You cant use smb shares.

As far as changing port, I use xampp for self hosting and I can change port number with that

The way this thread was worded I had no idea it was supposed to be a question. I thought you were trying to take credit for something.

Is the only reason I would need to use xampp or port 80 would be for hosting? (not looking to host atm)

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Also, if I run this hack, will I still be able to connect my console to the internet to play games such as Lego Dimensions (as well as others, just using that as an example)

Why does everyone insist on loadiine.ovh?

OP just copy the archive linked above to your SD card, plug it into your console then using the Wii Us browser navigate to www.wiiubru.com, your console will reboot and HBL will launch automagically, no need to go back to it multiple times, its a one visit and your done :)

It's the only one that seems to work 100%. It also has autoboot which is useful.
